Eleanor Rizzuto, a World War II veteran and the oldest resident at the Plattdeutsche Home Society in Franklin Square, celebrated her 104th birthday on Sept. 29, surrounded by fellow residents and staff, among others.

Rizzuto began preparing for a nursing career in 1939, at age 18, studying for three years at King’s County Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn. In 1942, she enlisted in the Army, and was deployed to serve as a bedside nurse at battle sites that same year. She served in North Africa and Italy during her deployment.

💙 Explore the Magical World of Indigo at Franklin Square Library 🎨

The Franklin Square Public Library is hosting an exhibit of local artist Bernadette Puleo, showcasing 16 pieces that explore the “mysterious” and “magical” world of indigo. Her work, which includes pulp paintings, shibori pieces, embroideries and watercolors, is on display through October in the first floor meeting room and lobby display cases. 🖌️✨

Puleo, a retired graphic and textile designer, has been experimenting with Japanese Indigo for over 20 years, creating unique pieces that highlight the pigment’s natural beauty and transformation through oxidation.

Sewanhaka High School celebrated homecoming on Oct. 4 with a lively parade full of school spirit! Students, staff, alumni and community members came together for a morning of colorful floats, performances, and plenty of purple and gold as the Ravens rallied across campus. 🏫🎺✨

Local officials, including Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti, Nassau County Legislator John Giuffre and Town Councilman Thomas Muscarella, joined the festivities, celebrating tradition and community pride.

🌟 Franklin Square Chamber Expands Local Business Network 🌟

The Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce is growing its network of local entrepreneurs after its Sept. 30 meeting at Salvatore’s of Elmont. Leaders welcomed new members — including Brooklyn Kitchen, Tile and Design, Planet Pooch and Garden Care Center — and discussed ways to strengthen the business district and support one another.

The group also highlighted a $10,000 PSEG grant for new “Welcome to Franklin Square” signs and plans for a social media campaign to showcase local businesses and encourage residents to shop locally.

💛 Hearts in Action: Local Gala Raises $17K to Fight Hunger 🍽️🌍

Giving Back to Community Corp. raised more than $17,000 at its annual Hearts in Action Gala on Sept. 27 at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck — funds that will help feed 200 families in Elmont and 3,000 people in Onitsha, Nigeria this holiday season. 🎉🇳🇬

Guests enjoyed dinner, music, and auctions while celebrating the charity’s mission of unity and compassion, led by founder Emilian Emeagwali. The event also honored local leaders and donors whose support helps provide meals, empower women, and expand outreach to those most in need. 💫

🎂 Honoring a Hero: WWII Veteran Celebrates 104 Years 🇺🇸💐

Cheers and birthday wishes filled the Plattdeutsche Home Society in Franklin Square as Eleanor Rizzuto, a World War II Army nurse and the home’s oldest resident, celebrated her 104th birthday on Sept. 29. 🕯️🎉

Friends, staff, and fellow veterans gathered to honor Rizzuto’s incredible life — from her years caring for wounded soldiers in North Africa and Italy to her continued independence and humor today. Known as a “tough cookie,” she remains an inspiration to all who know her. 💛

🍺 Ompahfest Brings Bavarian Cheer to Franklin Square! 🇩🇪🎶

Music, bratwurst and plenty of “prost!” filled the air at Ompahfest on Sept. 21, as Plattdeutsche Park Restaurant celebrated German-American heritage with food, music and dancing.

Guests dressed in lederhosen and Dirndls enjoyed Bavarian favorites like pretzels, frankfurters and potato pancakes while shopping from local vendors. 🌭🎺

The daylong festival featured live polka and oompah music from Bavarski, the Austrian Boys, die Spitzbuam and more — keeping the crowd singing, clapping and toasting all day long. 🍻
