WESTERN KANSAS’ FIRST SAFE HAVEN BABY BOX DEDICATED AT STATION 3

BY MEGHAN FLYNN

No shame, no blame and no names.
That is what Monica Kelsey, founder and Executive Director of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, says Safe Haven Baby Boxes offer women who choose to surrender their children.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes is a a non-profit that seeks to prevent the illegal abandonment of newborns.
The Baby Boxes are in accordance with the state’s Safe haven Law, which allows parents to safely surrender their children anonymously if they are 60 days old or younger and show no signs of neglect or abuse at dedicated locations.
The locations include hospitals, fire stations, police stations, law enforcement centers, city/county health departments and baby boxes.
Kelsey said the Baby Boxes give women another option – an option to safely, legally, lovingly and anonymously surrender their infants if they can’t walk into the fire station and hand them over.
Garden City dedicated and blessed the first Safe Haven Baby Box in western Kansas on Wednesday at Fire Station 3.
The box is the third in the state of Kansas and number 361 in the nation, Kelsey said.

PREVENTION NIGHT AT THE POOL TO BE HELD SUNDAY

BY MEGHAN FLYNN
Garden City Telegram

Prevention Night at the Pool returns for a fourth year on Sunday.
LiveWell Finney County is set to host the annual, free, family-friendly event from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Garden Rapids on Aug. 3.
Beth Koksal, LiveWell Director of Community Health, said the event focuses on drug and alcohol prevention, community resources and local support services.
Originally, the event was a smoke-free and vape-free event as it was funded by a grant that dealt with to***co prevention, but once that funding ended they took it up with LiveWell’s Drug Free Communities Grant and broadened that prevention scope of it, Koksal said.
“[We felt] if we can get people to come to an event that’s family friendly, that they want to come to and give them some information that will help them, we’re more than happy to do that,” she said.
Getting information out about prevention is really important, not just to youth, but to parents, Koksal said.
“If we can get parents to talk to their kids and start talking to their kids early about the dangers of drug and alcohol use, we know that that is really what works,” she said. “A lot of times parents just really don’t have the information that they need to start those conversations, so, we’re hoping we can give them some of the tools they need that night to talk to their kids.”
The event will feature educational booths offering resources on drug and alcohol prevention; mental health, su***de and problem gambling awareness; and local programs and services for youth and families.

ZOO WELCOMES NEW GIBBON SPECIES TO WILD ASIA

Lee Richardson Zoo has welcomed a new species to its animal residents.
A female northern white-cheeked gibbon, Tangra, recently arrived from Lincoln Children’s Zoo thanks to a Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommendation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). A male companion will join Tangra once the temperatures are appropriate for his travel.
White-cheeked gibbons are classified as lesser apes. Unlike the much bigger and bulkier great apes, gibbons are slender, diminutive, and more arboreal, and weigh on average under 20 pounds.
Gibbons have the longest arms in proportion to their legs of any primate. Their arms are about 1 ½ times as long as their legs, an adaptation that suits gibbons perfectly for their preferred form of locomotion, brachiation.
Gibbons move quickly and gracefully through the canopy of trees by swinging on the underside of branches, arm over arm. They typically live in male-female pairs with offspring, and pairs display a duetting call that helps them bond, locate one another, and advertise territory.
Northern white-cheeked gibbons are found primarily in the tropical and sub-tropical forests of Laos, and in some small pockets in Vietnam. Due to various human threats, the population has declined to fewer than 2,000 individuals worldwide. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies them as Critically Endangered.
Tangra is a very engaging gibbon who is fascinated and interested in people. She can be seen in her outdoor habitat in the zoo’s Wild Asia section.
Stop by Lee Richardson Zoo soon to see Tangra in her new home and learn more about the species, or contact the zoo at 620-276-1250.
