HOLCOMB BOYS ROLL IN OPENING TWO GAMES

BY BRAD NADING
Garden City Telegram

The Holcomb High School boys’ basketball team kicked off the 2025-26 season over the weekend, rolling to a pair of wins in front of the home crowd.
On Friday, the Longhorns hosted Syracuse and easily won 82-47, then on Saturday they hosted Wichita County and ended up with a 37-point victory, 77-40.
On Friday, the Longhorns used a stifling defense to limit the Bulldogs to six points in the first quarter while racking up 28 points of their own to take complete control of the game early.

GCHS GIRLS ROUT LIBERTY, 52-25, ON FRIDAY

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - It’s likely too early to tell just where the Garden City High School girls’ basketball team is, but one thing is for sure, they are putting up daunting numbers two games into the 2025-26 season.
After a 67-17 rout of host Coronado on Thursday at the Cougar Tip-Off Classic Gauntlet, the Buffs followed that up with a 52-25 triumph over Liberty High School on Friday.
For the time being, however, new GCHS Head Coach Kelley Snodgrass likes the balance that she is seeing from her Buffs as nine players got into the scoring column in moving the team to 2-0.

BUFFALO BOYS’ BASKETBALL GETS FIRST WIN
GCHS dominates Vista Ridge, 67-33

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - One of the most important things for a basketball team to consider in a three-day, three-game tournament is to put the previous game, either a win or a loss, in the file folder and move on to the next game.
That’s what the Garden City High School boys’ team was able to do on Friday at the second day of the Coronado (Colo.) Cougar Tipoff Gauntlet.
Following Thursday’s tough 62-58 loss to host Coronado, the Buffs had less than 24 hours to regroup and face Vista Ridge, Colo. And the change of days and opponents worked well for the Buffs as they rolled to a 67-33 victory to even their record at 1-1.
“It's nice to get that first win on the opening weekend," GCHS Head Coach Luke Swedberg said. "We were able to get everybody a lot of playing time. I thought we played with tempo and we were able to get a lot of different guys scoring."

GCCC WOMEN DOMINATE INDY IN 48-POINT WIN

BY GCC SPORTS INFORMATION
INDEPENDENCE —The Garden City Community College women’s basketball team left little doubt on Saturday afternoon, overwhelming Independence from the opening tip in an 80–32 road win to move to 9–1 overall and 4–1 in Jayhawk Conference play.
The Broncbusters set the tone with a 13–3 first quarter, stringing together an 8–0 start behind early buckets from Deija Roberson and Sokhna Ndiaye and a transition layup by London Turner. Garden City's defense was suffocating, holding the Pirates without a field goal for more than seven minutes and forcing turnover after turnover to control the tempo.
Garden City blew the game open in the second period, outscoring Independence 31–8 to take a 44–11 lead into the locker room. Elektra Mjoll caught fire from deep, knocking down multiple threes, while Paula Fernandez and Luana Luz joined the barrage from the perimeter. The Broncbusters turned Pirate miscues into instant offense, piling up 40 points off turnovers and 15 second-chance points by the final horn.

BRONCBUSTERS STUMBLE LATE, FALL 101–92 ON THE ROAD

BY GCCC SPORTS INFORMATION
INDEPENDENCE — The Garden City Community College men’s basketball team opened strong on Saturday afternoon but couldn't withstand a late push from Independence, dropping a 101–92 decision on the raod at ICC Fieldhouse.
The loss moves the Broncbusters to 8–3 overall and 3–2 in KJCCC play.
The Busters controlled long stretches of the first half with active hands and efficient shooting from outside. Dasean Lewis caught fire early — hitting four threes — while Zaire Lott provided a spark with attacking downhill finishes. Garden City took a 48–47 lead into halftime and appeared in rhythm offensively.
The Pirates erupted out of the break, attacking the paint and getting to the free-throw line in bunches. Independence shot 75% from the field in the second half and leaned heavily on interior scoring to flip momentum, eventually building a two-possession lead with under three minutes to play. The Broncbusters continued to fight, but clutch play by the Pirates in the final minutes closed the door.

CITY APPROVES RENOVATION AGREEMENT FOR TEMPORARY GCPD, SHERIFF’S OFFICE BUILDING

The Garden City Commission approved a renovation agreement for the temporary Garden City Police Department and Finney County Sheriff’s Office site located at 1210 N. Fleming St. at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
The departments will co-locate in the former Westlake True Value and the Fastenal portions of the building.
Courtney Prewitt, Garden City Police Chief, said the lease agreement between the city and the Duane Koster Trust and Kathy Koster Trust for the building was approved at the Commission’s May 6 meeting and originally included approximately 24,000 sq. ft.
The square footage increased, and subsequently an amendment to the lease was approved by the Commission at its July 1 meeting, by approximately 6,500 sq. ft., allowing the Sheriff’s Office to be able to co-locate in the facility, Prewitt said.

COUNTY TO PURCHASE BODY SCANNER FOR FINNEY COUNTY JAIL

BY MEGHAN FLYNN
Garden City Telegram

The Finney County Commission approved the purchase of a body scanner for the Finney County Jail at its regular meeting on Monday.
The purchase is for a total of $175,799 with Tek84 Advanced Security Screening.
Steve Martinez, Finney County Sheriff, said the body scanner is needed as the jail continues to experience increased risks related to contraband entering the facility and challenges in identifying potential medical issues upon intake.
“A full-body scanning system would allow the staff to detect weapons, drugs, and other items concealed on incoming inmates and reduce the reliance on labor-intensive physical searches,” he said.

FROM ZOO TO YOU
Bugs survive the winter through a variety of methods

BY EMILY SEXSON
It feels like fewer things bug me this time of year, quite literally. The whirs and buzzing that greeted me in my garden earlier this season have fallen silent. While I don’t miss the mosquitoes, flies, and chiggers that seemed to prefer my body to any other food source, I do miss the sight of a bumblebee landing on a bloom, or a praying mantis perched in silence, ready to ambush its prey.
So where do the bugs go when the temperature drops?
For some insects, migration is the key to surviving. The Monarch butterfly is known for the multi-generational journey it takes to overwintering sites in Mexico, but they’re not the only butterfly to migrate. The painted lady and red admiral are two more examples of migrating butterflies. Several species of dragonfly and moth also migrate. Just like migratory birds, they’re in search of warmer temperatures, food sources, and a safe space to breed.

BUSTER WOMEN COMPLETE COMEBACK OVER NO. 11 GRIZZLIES
GCCC tops Butler County in OT, 71-67

BY GCCC SPORTS INFORMATION

Down 12 in the fourth quarter to the 11th-ranked team in the country, the Garden City Community College women’s basketball team refused to blink.
Behind a monster night from sophomore guard Sokhna Ndiaye, the Broncbusters stormed back to stun No. 11 Butler County, 71–67 in overtime on Wednesday at Conestoga Arena, handing the Grizzlies their first loss of the season.
The game was tight early, with the teams knotted at 15 after the first quarter before Butler County edged in front 30–26 at the half.
The Grizzlies pushed that margin to double figures in the third and carried a 48–46 lead into the fourth, then appeared to seize control at 58–46 with just under six minutes to play.
That's when Garden City caught fire.

GCHS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL CRUISE IN SEASON OPENER
Buffaloes crush Coronado, Colo., 67-17

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - There were many positives for the Garden City High School girls’ basketball season-opening win in Colorado Springs, Colo., Thursday night.
The Buffs provided new coach Kelley Snodgrass with her first victory, a 67-17 romp over the host Coronado Cougars in the opening night of the Cougar Tip-Off Gauntlet.
“It’s a good start for the girls and considering we had four girls in double figures, I think the girls were unselfish, always looking to make that extra pass to give us an uncontested shot,” Snodgrass said.
The game was never in doubt from the outset as the Buffs scored the first 12 points of the opening quarter, interrupted by a Coronado three-pointer before the Buffs closed the stanza on a 12-0 run for a 24-3 advantage.
