GCHS GIRLS’ TENNIS TAKES SECOND AT REGIONALS
Ptacek claims singles title, also named WAC Player of the Year

BY GCHS ATHLETICS

If Chloe Ptacek could bookend the week of Oct. 6 -10, she would gladly accept that it was “a very good week.”
Her final week of the regular season as a senior tennis player at Garden City High School, and in fact, she is the only senior on the team, began with a victory at the Western Athletic Conference championship in singles and being named WAC Player of the Year.
The week was capped off on Friday when she played on her home courts at the GCHS Tennis Complex and went 4-0 to capture the Class 6A regional singles crown to qualify for the state tournament in Olathe on Oct. 17-18.
Ptacek, who improved her season record to 19-8, never lost a set in any of her four victories.
Her championship match win over Maize’s Hannah Garzon (7-5, 6-4) enabled the Buffs to capture second place in the team race with 12 points while Maize easily took the top spot with 20 points. Also, the Buffs nudged out rival Dodge City for the runner-up plaque.
"Chloe really dedicated herself to improving over the course of the season," GCHS first year head coach David Snodgrass said. "It's difficult to make the move from doubles to singles, but we worked really hard to make adjustments and work on new shots to help her, and it paid off."
Ptacek’s sophomore teammate, Vivian Whitham, also had a big day, going 2-2 and placing fourth to earn a trip to the state tournament in her first year of varsity competition.

GCHS FOOTBALL FALLS AT WICHITA SOUTHEAST
Hatchet Game set for Friday at Buffalo Stadium

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
WICHITA - When Joe Price, the first-year head coach of the Garden City High School football team, viewed game film of Wichita Southeast, he knew his team would be facing a team nothing like the team that Garden City had overwhelmed in 2024, 48-0.
Corby Milleson, a second-year head coach for the Golden Buffaloes had revamped his team and entered Friday night's non-conference battle with a 3-2 record while the Buffs were looking to end a two-game losing streak in search of their second win of the season.
Price's concerns were well-founded as the Golden Buffaloes defended home turf with a come-from-behind 21-10 triumph Friday night at Southeast Stadium.
The loss drops Price's Buffaloes to 1-5 overall while Southeast improves to 4-2. Garden City will return home for their final regular-season match-up in the annual Hatchet Game with Dodge City on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:05 p.m.

BUFFALO VOLLEYBALL GOES 3-2 AT MCPHERSON INVITE
George reaches 1,000th career assist in tourney

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
MCPHERSON - When the McPherson Invitational showed up on the Garden City High School volleyball schedule, GCHS Head Coach Trista Bailey knew that her youthful squad would be facing some monumental challenges.
Included in the eight-team, two-pool tournament on Saturday, were Class 5A powerhouse Wichita-Bishop Carroll, 5A-ranked Hutchinson as well as other potential ranked schools.
Then, the pairings came through the week prior, and the Buffs were placed in the same pool with both Bishop Carroll and Hutchinson along with Wichita Heights.
While the Buffs took both Carroll and Hutchinson to three sets, they dropped both of those matches and in between powered by Heights to finish 1-2 in the pool play.
In the opening match of the day, the Buffs fell to the Salthawks of Hutch, 25-20, 15-25, 17-25 and then won in straight sets against Wichita Heights (25-21, 25-9). Then came the big match with Bishop Carroll (33-1) and the Buffs took them to the limit in three sets, falling 16-25, 25-17 and 22-25.

GCHS BOYS’ SOCCER CLAIMS 2OT WIN AT BLUE VALLEY-NORTH
Buffaloes improve to 11-1-1

BY GCHS ATHLETICS
OVERLAND PARK - Garden City High School boys’ soccer team left Overland Park on Saturday with a 2-1, double-overtime, victory over Blue Valley-North.
The victory improved the Buffs’ season record to 11-1-1 and kept them in the No. 2 seed position for postseason regional pairings later this month. The Mustangs, a Class 5A school and member of the tough Eastern Kansas League, saw their record dip to 6-4-1.
“It was definitely a heart-thumping game,” GCHS head coach Jose Vital said. “With us being down in the first half, I had a feeling this could either be good or bad for us.”
North got on the scoreboard first, getting the first goal in the 25th minute when Bennett Criesi won a chipped ball with his feet. He cut one of the Buffs’ defenders to tap the ball into the bottom right side of the net.
Kenley Pierre knotted the score for the Buffs in the 34th minute when Giovannie Rodriguez dribbled down the left wing and crossed the ball just outside the Mustangs’ net and when trying to clear the ball, North’s keeper missed and Pierre was there to finish the shot.
There was no scoring from either team in the 40-minute second half, sending it into sudden death overtime. The first 10-minute extra period resulted in no goals and again sending it to the second OT.
In the 95th minute, five minutes into the second OT, Pierre dribbled in the penalty box and got a shot at the Mustangs’ goalkeeper. The shot was blocked only to find the foot of Saul Ortega who cut to his left and shot the ball into the bottom center of the net.

GCCC WOMEN TIE BARTON COUNTY ON PITCH
Buster men fall to Cougars

BY GCCC SPORTS NFORMATION
The Garden City Community College women's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Barton County Saturday at Broncbuster Stadium.
The Broncbusters struck first in the 34th minute when Maria Galisteo buried a perfectly placed shot from outside the box — giving Garden City the early momentum. Garden City continued to press forward through the first half, outshooting Barton 6–3 and creating multiple quality looks from Ariel Martinez and Wilma Nyberg, including a near-miss that ricocheted off the post in the opening minutes.
In the second half, the pace shifted after an own goal leveled the match in the 56th minute. Despite the setback, the Broncbusters' defense, led by Alessandra Tovar and Maddison Foster, held firm, limiting Barton's chances and keeping the pressure contained. GCCC goalkeeper Isabelle Barsk recorded two key saves, one coming late to preserve the tie.
With the result, Garden City moves to 9–4–3 overall and 4–4–2 in Jayhawk Conference play, remaining in strong contention as the regular season enters its final stretch.
Following the women’s action, the GCCC men's soccer team took to the pitch but dropped a 6–1 decision to the Cougars.

VOTERS TO DECIDE ON FUNDING NEW JAIL, LEC RENOVATIONS

BY MEGHAN FLYNN
Garden City Telegram

A sales tax question asking voters if they wish to enforce a half-cent sales tax will be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
The proposed sales tax is aimed at financing the construction of a new Finney County Jail and a major renovation to the Finney County Law Enforcement Center.
Gary Meagher, Interim Finney County Administrator, said the LEC has been plagued by costly issues due to its design with the jail on the third floor and the building’s age.
The LEC was constructed in 1982, with the jail being constructed on the top floor, Meagher said. An expansion to the LEC was carried out in 2001.
“There’s nothing structurally wrong with the Law Enforcement Center, however, the design has resulted in a long history of costly maintenance issues, particularly as it relates to the large mechanical systems, more significantly the plumbing as it’s associated with the third-floor jail situation,” he said.

AN 111-YEAR-OLD WEDDING DRESS RETURNS HOME TO SUNNYLAND BED AND BREAKFAST

BY MEGHAN FLYNN
Garden City Telegram

A 111-year-old wedding dress, worn by the granddaughter of the original owners of Sunnyland Bed and Breakfast at what may have been the first wedding held in the house after its construction, is returning.
Sunnyland, a Queen Anne Victorian building, was built in 1909 as the home of David and Maria Menke in Garden City.
Their granddaughter Mildred Lemmert, née Checkley, got married at the house in 1914.
Charlie Moore, grandson of Lemmert, and his wife Wendy, have decided to loan the dress to Sunnyland so it can be displayed.
Fred and Kathryn Askren own Sunnyland, purchasing it on Aug. 1, 2002.
Fred Askren said the Menke’s were pioneers to the city, arriving before Garden City was a town.
“Then they eventually built this house; had it built and lived here,” he said.
The contractors who built the house claim they built over 100 houses in Garden City, Askren said. They built another house called Cedar Cliff on Ninth Street around the same time Sunnyland was built.
“This one stood the test of time pretty good,” he said.

RED CROSS TO HOLD BLOOD DRIVES IN AREA

AMERICAN RED CROSS RELEASE
The American Red Cross asks donors to make an appointment now to give blood to support patients counting on a consistent blood supply to survive and heal. While emergencies often grab headlines, the need for blood is constant. Especially in October, as donation appointments can often drop quickly when people settle into busy fall routines and make plans around upcoming school breaks.
Additionally, the threat of hurricanes persists this month. Because blood has a short shelf life and can only come from volunteer blood donors, any disruptions in the ability to collect lifesaving blood can have serious consequences for those seeking medical care.
Help patients this fall and make an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
All who come to give blood, platelets or plasma Sept. 22-Oct. 19 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. For details, see RedCrossBlood.org/Fall. Those who give Oct. 20-Nov. 16, 2025, will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice, plus be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. See RedCrossBlood.org/Harvest for details.
