I had the privilege of bringing my New York Film Academy buddy, D.k. Lee, to Soweto International Film Festival 2022. This is actually his first time in Africa. We’re working together on the Hollywood award event, Okola Awards - Heroes of Africa. Look out for more pronouncements.

And here’s the finished sample piece! Okola Awards - Heroes of Africa. Over forty of this beautiful metal will be presented in Hollywood to distinguished Africans, come February 2024, when indigenous Africans join the rest of the world to celebrate Black History Month.

Do you have one or two African heroes, who have done so well in their various callings to make you proud? Get ready to nominate them and vote for them to take this African bronze piece of art from the ancient Benin Kingdom plus prize money home.

Caveat - Each vote you cast for your heroes gives you a chance to receive 10% of the prize money from each of your victorious heroes as a token of appreciation for helping them win. If your hero takes a million dollars home, you may be lucky to take $100k home.

Heroes of Africa launches in Johannesburg, South Africa on 25 November 2022. I’m boarding my flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in a few hours to arrive Oliver Tambo in two days time. Join us at Soweto International Film Festival 2022.

Still work in progress, but couldn’t wait to share before boarding my flight to Soweto International Film Festival 2022, where the award event is scheduled to launch on 25 November 2022. Please, join us.

I in front of the camera and he behind the camera, we’re scheduled to launch Okola Awards - Heroes of Africa and teach filmmaking to knowledge-hungry South Africans. We have just about four days to teach them enough filmmaking to develop a story, shoot the film and edit it. It’s gonna be a very busy but fun-packed week in Johannesburg. 19th-26th November 2022. Join us.

Black History Month is celebrated in the United States of America and Canada in the moth of February, while it’s celebrated in the United Kingdom and Ireland in the month of October.

It originally started in 1926 as Negro History Week as proposed by Carter Woodson, an African American historian. School boards came on board; Mayors came on board; the White House came on board. And it became Black History Month in 1970. President Gerald Ford recognized and celebrated Black History Month in 1976.

The original idea was to recognize and celebrate distinguished African Americans. Then the need to keep black history alive arose. Now, there is need to go full cycle by including the indigenous African People in the narrative. Wouldn’t you agree?
