Daniel Brooks had imagined this moment a thousand times.
The church was exactly as Emma had dreamed it would be.
Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, painting the wooden pews with colors of gold, blue, and crimson. Fresh white roses lined the aisle. Family and friends filled every seat.
Everything was perfect.
Almost.
Standing at the altar, Daniel couldn't stop smiling.
Across from him, Emma Reynolds looked breathtaking in her wedding dress.
The guests watched with admiration.
The photographer quietly captured every second.
The officiant smiled warmly.
“Today, we gather to celebrate—”
He never finished the sentence.
Daniel reached for Emma's hand.
And Emma pulled away.
A collective gasp swept through the church.
The sound echoed against the high ceiling.
Every guest froze.
Daniel blinked.
Certain he had imagined it.
But Emma had already stepped backward.
One step.
Then another.
The smile disappeared from her face.
The entire atmosphere changed.
Confusion spread through the crowd like a ripple through water.
The photographer lowered his camera.
The bridesmaids exchanged nervous looks.
Daniel stared at her.
“Emma?”
She didn't answer.
For a moment, she looked like she couldn't breathe.
Tears gathered in her eyes.
Not joyful tears.
Something else.
Fear.
The officiant shifted uncomfortably.
The soft wedding music continued for another few seconds before slowly fading away.
Now the church was silent.
Every eye remained fixed on the bride.
Daniel stepped forward.
Concern replacing excitement.
“Emma... what's wrong?”
His voice was calm.
Gentle.
The way someone speaks to a person they love.
Emma swallowed.
Her lips parted slightly.
Still no answer.
Instead, she looked past him.
Toward the back of the church.
Toward the entrance.
Daniel followed her gaze.
Several guests did the same.
Nothing seemed unusual.
The doors remained closed.
The sunlight streamed through the stained glass.
Everything looked normal.
Yet Emma's face continued losing color.
As if she had seen something terrifying.
The front row began whispering.
Her mother gripped the edge of the pew.
Daniel's best man looked increasingly worried.
“Emma?”
Daniel asked again.
This time his voice carried urgency.
Emma looked as though she wanted to say something.
But whatever words she had were trapped somewhere inside her.
Then—
BANG.
The church doors slammed open.
The noise echoed like thunder.
Everyone jumped.
Heads whipped toward the entrance.
A small figure stumbled inside.
A little girl.
No older than eight.
She was breathing hard.
Her pink dress was wrinkled.
Her hair was messy.
Tears streamed down her face.
The sight immediately felt wrong.
Children weren't supposed to look this terrified.
The church fell completely silent.
The girl stood in the doorway for half a second.
Trying to catch her breath.
Then she began running.
Straight down the aisle.
Guests moved aside instinctively.
Some stood.
Others turned in confusion.
Nobody understood what was happening.
The little girl kept running.
Past the flowers.
Past the pews.
Past dozens of shocked faces.
Daniel stared.
Recognition flashed across his face.
A recognition that did not go unnoticed.
Emma saw it immediately.
So did several guests.
The little girl wasn't looking at anyone else.
Only Daniel.
She pushed through the crowd.
Desperate.
Terrified.
As if every second mattered.
The church seemed to shrink around her.
Every eye followed her movement.
Every whisper died.
By the time she reached the altar, she was crying openly.
Daniel knelt instinctively.
“Lily?”
The name slipped out before he could stop it.
The church reacted instantly.
Guests exchanged stunned looks.
Emma's heart dropped.
Because Daniel knew her.
The little girl grabbed his sleeve with both hands.
Her entire body was shaking.
“Lily,” Daniel repeated.
“What happened?”
The girl struggled to speak.
For a moment, only sobs came out.
Then she finally forced the words through her tears.
“You have to come now.”
Daniel's expression changed.
Instantly.
Not confusion.
Not annoyance.
Fear.
Raw fear.
The kind that appears when someone hears news they've been dreading for years.
The church noticed.
Emma noticed most of all.
Because she had never seen that look on his face before.
Lily tightened her grip on his sleeve.
The entire church held its breath.
Then she whispered the words that shattered the wedding.
“She's awake.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Daniel's face went white.
Emma stared at him.
The guests stared at him.
No one understood.
But everyone knew one thing.
Whoever "she" was...
Daniel already knew exactly who the little girl meant.
His eyes filled with something Emma had never seen before.
Hope.
And terror.
At the same time.
The little girl looked up at him desperately.
“Please,” she begged.
“We don't have much time.”
Daniel didn't move.
Emma felt her pulse hammering in her ears.
Because suddenly she wasn't wondering who Lily was.
She was wondering who had just woken up.
And why her future husband looked like he'd seen a ghost.
Then Daniel slowly stood.
Still staring at the little girl.
Still unable to speak.
And Emma realized something even worse.
The look on his face wasn't the expression of a man facing a surprise.
It was the expression of a man confronting a secret.
One he had buried a very long time ago.
