Practical Magic 2 was even more disappointing than I expected it to be, but not for the reason you think.
These modern day movie remakes and sequels are often fine, and this WOULD have been if not for one main thing.
Sure the plastic surgery was excessive. Sure the opening few minutes totally rewrote the timeline of the first film. Sure the story was cookie cutter and yes the dialog was laughable at times… but all of that was expected.
I expected more practical effects. I expected more movie magic. I expected Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock to have their faces replaced by masks of themselves.
What I did not expect was for the cinematography to be unwatchable. WOW some BAD decisions were made from the choice of lens to the aperture, from the lighting to the digital backgrounds… it all was so distracting I could barely take in the story. I actually felt physically sick from some of the camerawork. It’s like they specifically filmed it to be watched on an iPhone.
Anybody feel differently?

Last night I got a moment to speak with Nathan Baesel (Leslie Vernon) David Stieve (Writer/ Producer) and Gordy Haab (composer) for a brief moment at The VHS Society screening of Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. This is, by and far, one of my most cherished films in my collection and it is now my only autographed item ever obtained. And I like it that way.

Not only was seeing this film with an audience an absolute treat (comedy and horror are ment to be watched in groups of 4 or more!) but I got to have this experience with my dear friend Watson who had never seen the film before! And to top it off, Gordy, David and Nathan were so kind to let me gush over their film and share a little bit about myself and my own journey within the horror genre.

If you live in LA and you haven’t been to a screening at The VHS Society, it’s an underground must! (Well we actually met in the attic of a rustic saloon, but you get my drift 🤣). They have vendors, popcorn, drinks, and a viewing environment that actually feels like you’re in a horror movie!

If you’re already a fan of Leslie Vernon, then you may know that a second film is in the works, picking up 20 years later!! They are filming soon and hope to release next year! I can’t wait!!! Behind The Mask II
