Aliko Dangote and Engr. Farouk Ahmed, two prominent figures from the same North-West geopolitical zone, have been locked in an intense economic and reputational battle for over a year.

At one point, Engr. Farouk, leveraging his position as Chief Executive of the Petroleum Regulatory Agency, alleged that Dangote’s fuel contained sulphur levels far above national and global standards. Subsequent independent tests, however, proved this claim to be false.

In response, Dangote accused Farouk of using proceeds of corruption to sponsor his children’s education abroad—an allegation that reportedly culminated in Farouk’s resignation as NMDPRA boss this evening.

Throughout this entire episode, no one framed the conflict as Northerners being hostile to one another. No one accused Farouk of deliberately sabotaging a “brother’s” business, nor was Dangote blamed for causing a fellow Northerner to lose a lucrative position.

Now pause for a moment—and imagine if both men were Igbos.
