For National Sewing Month, Mary Heveron-Smith is writing a letter to an old friend: sewing.

The winning look wasn’t the only standout from the Threads-Folkwear Sewing Challenge. Meet the four other finalists and their creative interpretations of Folkwear’s vintage designs.

Laura Pedersen-Schulz created a shortened floral version of the , while Betsy Hulslander combined the and for a Colorado-inspired ensemble.

Jessie Shumake transformed the and with silk, paint, beads, and feathers. Using the same patterns, Rose Szabo took them in an entirely different direction with machine embroidery and a nuno-felted tunic.

Congratulations to Eve Kovacs, winner of the Threads-Folkwear Sewing Challenge!

Sewists were invited to choose from 50 Folkwear vintage patterns and reinterpret them for today. Eve’s winning all-white ensemble, which pairs the with the , combines delicate heirloom sewing with soft tailoring.

Pin tucks, lace insertion, custom cuffs, and thoughtful pattern adjustments add texture and detail while highlighting the contrast between the feminine blouse and menswear-inspired trousers.
