As we get ready to say good-bye to April on the calendar, we are nearing the homestretch of the North Dakota spring prep sports season; and that means post-season competitive opportunities in a multitude of sports are awaiting on the not-too-distant horizon. In the week that just concluded, uncooperative weather conditions—specifically, abnormally cool temps and brisk winds—forced the postponement and cancellation of several sporting activities. But we do have some results to report from the scaled-back docket of outdoor athletic events that were staged. Among those are scores from some Class B Region 8 baseball games that involved the Hazen Bison and Beulah Miners. In a game called on KDKT Sports Radio, Hazen stumbled to defending regional champion Shiloh Christian by a tally of 10-0. In that decisive shutout loss, Skyhawk Soph righthander Jack Pelham excelled both on the mound and at the plate. While pitching, Pelham tossed a complete-game one-hitter while fanning 10 Hazen hitters; and with a bat in hand, he registered 3 hits in 4 plate appearances (including a triple) and scored 2 runs and collected 2 RBI. Shiloh also prevailed over Hazen in the nightcap of their twinbill by a score of 12-8. In two other Region 8 affairs in which Hazen played, the Bison fell at home to Hettinger-Scranton-New England 8-7 in 8 innings but then beat the same Nighthawks on the road the following evening, 4-3. Meanwhile, in other Region 8 diamond matchups, Beulah swept Hettinger-Scranton-New England 10-0 & 11-0, getting a pair of pitching gems from senior right-handers Braylen Schirado and Tate Jordan. Schirado threw a 2-hitter at the Nighthawks, while Jordan no-hit them. Then two days later, Beulah walloped Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton 13-1 in a regional-counter, with Philip Weidner blasting a 320+feet grand slam to pace the Miners' offense and Sr P Coye Steffan limiting the Cardinals to just one hit over 5 innings. Beulah also won game-two of the double-header (non-counting in the regional standings) 9-5, with Jr right-hander Braden Mehrer notching the pitching victory. Heading into April's last week, Beulah sports an overall spring record of 12-1 and a league-ledger of 5-1. Finally, with regard to Region 8 teams, the surging Skyhawks of Shiloh Christian—now 4-0 overall in league-games—improved their overall season record to 7-4, downing defending state-runnerup LaMoure-Litchville-Marion last Friday evening at Bismarck's Dwyer Field, 5-2. Now turning our attention to some Class A West Region baseball encounters, Mandan swept St. Mary's 8-1 & 7-0 and Legacy took two games from Century 10-2 & 9-1. There were also two twinbills split in West Region play. In one, Minot North edged Mandan 3-2, before the Braves bounced back to claim the nightcap 7-6. In the other, Legacy beat Bismarck 11-5, before the Demons stormed back to dump the Sabers in game two, 17-7. Now, on the Class B softball scene, Region 4 powerhouse Beulah cruised to two shutout wins—14-0 over Wilton-Wing and 5-0 over Harvey-Fessenden-Bowdon. In the first white-washing, Miners' Sr P Addie Dale-Geiger recorded 10 strikeouts and teammate Cassie Christensen registered 3 hits in 4 at-bats with two triples. In the win over the visiting Hornets, Dale-Geiger was a perfect 4-for-4 hitting; and in the circle she tossed a 2-hitter with 18 strikeouts. In other Class B matchups, Heart River hammered Washburn-Center-Stanton 15-8; Washburn-Center-Stanton humbled Nedrose 15-4; Wilton-Wing nudged Hazen 7-5; and New England-Bowman County swept Garrison 16-4 & 14-10 and split a doubleheader with South Prairie-Max, winning game one 20-16 but losing game two 13-1. In Class A softball, in a twinbill featuring the top-two ranked teams in the state, Dickinson and Williston took turns beating each other. The Mavericks belted the Coyotes in game one, 9-3, while the Coyotes nipped the Mavericks in game two, 11-10. In another doubleheader, Mandan swept Minot North 11-6 & 15-7. Additionally, Dickinson defeated West Fargo twice by 6-1 tallies each time and Legacy trounced Turtle Mountain twice by scores of 23-1 & 18-2. On the pitch in Class A West Region girls' soccer, Mandan edged Minot North 2-1; Minot shut out Legacy 2-nil; Century blitzed St. Mary's 4-1; Jamestown defeated St. Mary's 3-1; and Century & Bismarck played to a 0-0 tie. Then on the links in Class A West Region boys' golf action at the Bismarck Invitational, only 4 strokes separated the top-four teams in the final standings. Although Minot, Williston, and Mandan all finished with 315 team strokes over 18 holes, the Magicians claimed 1st, while the Coyotes were slotted 2nd and the Braves 3rd, based on teams' 5th-scores used for the tie-breaker. Century's Bryson Fischer was meet-medalist with his round of 74. Also, here are results from Friday afternoon girls' tennis duals: Minot North 6, St. Mary's 3; Bismarck 4, West Fargo Horace 1; Century 5, WF Horace, 0; and Legacy 7, Williston 2. Finally, KDKT Sports Radio will feature three Class B baseball games over the airwaves and on its website this week: Tuesday (April 28), Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton visits Hazen in Region 8 play; Thursday (April 30), Shiloh Christian heads to Beulah in a Region 8 tilt; and Friday (May 1), Des Lacs-Burlington journeys to Beulah for inter-regional action. Each game is scheduled for a 4:30 pm CT start, with KDKT's pre-game show commencing at 4:00 each of those days.

Now officially into the second-half of April, outdoor prep spring sports in North Dakota are in full-swing with about another six weeks of action awaiting us on the calendar. In this week that just concluded, KDKT Sports Radio covered a pair of Class B Region 8 baseball tilts involving the Beulah Miners. In the first of those played at Bismarck's Dwyer Field last Tuesday, Shiloh Christian held off Beulah 6-4, as the Skyhawks got a complete game from starting right-handed pitcher Easton Monson. Shiloh's center-fielder and cleanup-hitter Mason Moldenhauer led his team on offense, banging out 3 hits in 4 at-bats including a triple, while driving in two runs. In the loss, the Miners' Jack Skalsky also went 3-for-4 at the dish. In the non-region-counting second game, Beulah doubled up Shiloh Christian 12-6. Two days later on Beulah's home turf in Coal Country—Goldmann Field—the Miners outlasted familiar rival Hazen 13-10, as the two teams combined for 30 base-hits. Of that total, Beulah registered 20 safeties. A quartet of Miner batters recorded 3 hits each: Braylen Schirado; Andrew Soine; Jack Skalsky; & Benny Schirado. Meanwhile, four Hazen hitters secured two hits each: Jace Goebel; Adam Novak; Easton Haaland; and Trypp Johnson. Additionally, both Skalsky of Beulah and Goebel of Hazen went yard with solo home runs. In the non-region-counter that followed, Beulah blanked Hazen 7-zip, as the Miners' Sr right-hander Coye Steffan tossed a 5-inning, no-hit shutout at the Bison. Now heading into this new week of play, Beulah sports an overall record of 8-1 and a regional mark of 3-1, while Hazen is 2-2-1 overall and 1-2 in Region 8 play. Elsewhere in Region 8 diamond action last week, Hazen handled Heart River 6-0; Hettinger-Scranton-New England humbled Heart River 14-1; and Shiloh Christian walloped Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton 12-1 & 9-1. In Class B Region 6 baseball contests last week, Central McLean dispatched Surrey 14-0 & 10-0; Velva-Drake-Anamoose swept both Bishop Ryan-Nedrose (11-1 & 12-4) and Garrison (9-6 & 6-3); Bishop Ryan-Nedrose downed Central McLean twice by tallies of 7-2 & 4-2; and Surrey took two games from South Prairie-Max by scores of 12-2 & 6-3. In a pair of high-profile baseball encounters played out east, Carrington creamed Kidder County 15-4 and defending state champion Thompson thumped Hatton-Northwood 7-1. Turning our attention to Class A West Region baseball showdowns, garnering doubleheader sweeps were Minot North, Century, Bismarck, Jamestown, and Legacy, respectively, over Century, Mandan, both Williston & Watford City, Legacy, and Minot. Splitting twinbills were Mandan and Williston, Dickinson and Minot North, St. Mary's and Jamestown, and St. Mary's and Watford City. On the ND prep softball scene, in Class A West Region play, sweeping doubleheaders were Williston (2), Bismarck, Dickinson, Legacy, and Mandan (2), at the expense, respectively, of both Century & Legacy, Jamestown, Century, Minot North, and both Minot and Jamestown. Mandan also throttled Watford City 11-1 in a single game that was a double-counter in the regional standings. On the Class B softball landscape, defending Region 4 titlist Beulah won games on four consecutive days last week—edging Class A Bismarck 13-12, blanking Hazen 7-zip, gashing Garrison 20-0, and blitzing Central McLean 11-1. In the tight one-run win over the Demons, Miners' Sr P Addie Dale-Geiger fanned 10 Bismarck batters, while going 4-for-4 at the plate and hammering 3 home runs. Now, in West Region girls' soccer matches last week, claiming shutout wins were Minot North (1-0 over Century), Minot (5-0 over St. Mary's), and Jamestown (2-0 at the expense of Legacy). In a close cross-river matchup, Mandan nudged Bismarck 2-1. Then in high girls' tennis duals last week, winning twice each were Century and Minot (the Patriots over Bismarck and Minot North, while the Majettes at the expense of Williston and Century). Additionally, Legacy dumped Jamestown 7-2 and Dickinson edged Minot North 5-4. Now transitioning to prep track-&-field, five teams competed last week in the Bismarck Public Schools Boys' Invitational Meet, with Bismarck nipping West Fargo Sheyenne by only 2.5 points for the team title (107.5 to 105). Rounding out the team standings were Legacy in 3rd place (100 points), Century in 4th place (86.5 points), and Mandan in 5th (74 points). The meet's noteworthy highlight was Legacy Sabers' sprinter Zayden Horne establishing an all-time state record in the 100-meter dash, clocking a fabulous timing of 10.27 seconds. In the Mandan Kiwanis Club Girls' Invitational, Legacy held off Mandan for 1st place in the team standings (134 to 127 points) with Bismarck nabbing 3rd place (123 points), Century securing 4th place (110 points), and Minot finishing in a distant 5th place (with 64 points). Finally, this week, KDKT will showcase a pair of Class B Region 8 baseball skirmishes for your listening pleasure. On Tuesday (April 21), Hazen visits Shiloh Christian, with first pitch slated for 4:00 pm CT. Then on Friday (April 24), Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton hosts Beulah, with that game scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm CT.

With the Easter holiday behind us, North Dakota spring prep sports really took off this past week with a plethora of baseball and softball games, girls' soccer action, and track-&-field meets staged statewide, plus a season-opening boys' golf tournament. KDKT Sports Radio was on the scene in Coal Country this past week to showcase a pair of Class B baseball contests that went right down to the final out to determine the victors. In Beulah on Tuesday evening, the host Miners edged Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton (WWCS) 4-3 in 12 innings to lay claim to a Region 8 win. Delivering a walk-off RBI single in the final frame was Beulah clean-up hitter Lucas Weidner who drove in fellow senior Jack Skalsky after his lead-off double. Four Miner hurlers—Braylen Schirado, Jack Skalsky, Andrew Soine, and Tayten Jordan-- combined to limit the Cardinals to a mere 4 hits while fanning 15 WWCS batters. In defeat, WWCS right-hander Ethan Retterath whiffed 10 Beulah hitters over a 7-inning relief stint. Following its razor-thin win at the expense of the Cardinals, Beulah went on to win four more games by the weekend's arrival. The Miners swept both Heart River and Watford City on the road in a pair of twinbills played on Thursday and Friday evenings. Beulah handled the Cougars of Heart River 7-2 & 9-2 while hammering the Wolves of Watford City 17-0 & 13-9. In the other KDKT-featured diamond tussle, Hazen--rallying from two early-game deficits--outlasted Garrison 6-5 on a walk-off wild-pitch in the bottom of the 7th inning. The previous day, the Bison got edged by WWCS 7-6 before playing the Cards to a 12-all tie in the twinbill's nightcap. Elsewhere on the Class B baseball landscape this past week, Central McLean split a pair of doubleheaders. The Cougars beat Garrison 6-4 before falling to the Troopers 8-5. Central McLean also nudged Velva-Drake-Anamoose (VDA) 3-1 before losing to the Aggies 7-3. Additionally, in more Region 8 play, Shiloh Christian and Hettinger-Scranton-New England took turns beating each other at Bismarck's Dwyer Field on Friday evening. The Skyhawks initially blanked the Nighthawks 3-0, with the Nighthawks avenging their game-one defeat with a 9-4 follow-up victory in game two. Furthermore, in Class B games, Bishop Ryan-Nedrose rocked South Prairie-Max in Region 6 action 23-3 & 15-5, while slamming Surrey 13-3 & 9-0; Des Lacs-Burlington whitewashed Stanley-Powers Lake twice—12-0 & 10-0; and Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood crunched Kenmare-Bowbells-Burke Central 11-1. Turning our attention to Class A West Region baseball encounters, Mandan swept Watford City 12-1 & 3-1 but got swept by Dickinson 12-6 & 7-1; Legacy whipped Watford City twice by tallies of 17-0 & 10-1; and Minot took the broom to Jamestown by scores of 6-5 & 4-2. Also, Dickinson nipped Minot 6-5 but stumbled to the Magicians 4-2; Williston split a doubleheader with St. Mary's, claiming game one 11-1 but dropping game two to the Saints, 3-1. In girls' softball doubleheaders last week, Class A's defending state titlist Williston whipped Class B powerhouse Beulah, 15-3, while also demolishing Watford City 23-0.
