Two guitars. One unmistakable sound.

Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were the essential guitar partnership at the heart of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Both were Jacksonville natives and early members of the band, helping shape its sound from the group's formative years through its rise to international prominence.

By the mid-1970s, their interplay had become one of Skynyrd's defining musical signatures. When Steve Gaines joined the band in 1976, he completed the famous three-guitar lineup alongside Collins and Rossington. That configuration can be heard on One More from the Road and Street Survivors.

Collins was known for his powerful lead work and extended solos, while Rossington supplied another distinctive guitar voice. Together, they helped create the layered guitar sound that became central to songs such as “Free Bird,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Simple Man,” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Archival records document Collins and Rossington performing together repeatedly during this period. Getty, for example, has photographs of the pair onstage in New York in April 1976, and another series from 1977.

The exact date and location of this particular photograph are not confirmed by the sources I could verify, so I would keep the dating at 1976–77 rather than claim a specific venue.

What is certain is the importance of the two men pictured here. Allen Collins and Gary Rossington weren't simply two guitarists in Lynyrd Skynyrd—they were the foundation of its legendary guitar sound.
