In 431, the Council of Ephesus officially declared that Mary was Theotokos, “God-Bearer.”

At this time, the patriarch Nestorius had spread the heresy that Christ was the union of two persons and Mary had only given birth to the human person.

To uphold the hypostatic union of the divine and human natures of Christ, the council issued that "If anyone does not confess that Emmanuel is God in truth, and therefore that the holy virgin is the mother of God (for she bore in a fleshly way the Word of God become flesh), let him be anathema."

Thus, the Church sealed Mary’s role as Theotokos as dogma, affirming the full divinity and humanity of Jesus her Son, God Incarnate. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God was established by Pope Pius XI in 1931.
