The daughter of a wealthy Roman family, Cecilia was fated for marriage, but she felt called to chastity.

Cecilia asked her dear guardian angel to protect her virginity, invoking all of heaven with prayer, fasting, and mortification. During her wedding ceremony with Valerian, her betrothed, Cecilia sang to the Lord in her heart for protection. She told Valerian of her angel, prompting him to be baptized. When he returned, Valerian saw the angel and resolved to love Cecilia in a chaste union.

For the remainder of their lives, the holy couple converted souls and buried martyrs with honor, before they were both martyred themselves by Roman prefects.

Today, we recall the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Mary was promised as a young child to be raised in the temple.

Though not included in the Gospels, this event is recorded in the Protoevangelium of James and several mystic visions. It has been celebrated since the early Church, but was not added to the Roman Missal until the 15th century.

Mary’s total fiat is reflected in the Presentation, marking her complete surrender to God since her tender youth and perfecting her to bear our Savior.

Elizabeth was married to Louis IV in 1221. Despite her royal status, Elizabeth lived like the poor and devoted herself to charitable works along with her husband.

After Louis's death in 1227, Elizabeth was mistreated by her in-laws. So, she left court and joined the Third Order of St. Francis, committing the rest of her life to service and poverty.
