An amazing body of artwork from Galen Silver can be viewed at Pittsford Fine Art on Friday, July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Galen Silver paints in a variety of styles and particularly enjoys subject matter that focuses on painting people in settings where the viewer can imagine a story. Galen embraces the challenge of capturing the personality of the subjects and paints until he feels he has a permanent connection to that work.

I love "Dancing in the Street" recorded in the 1960s by Martha and the Vandellas, it’s such a happy song. And it typifies life for residents and visitors in the village of Sodus Point and communities around Sodus Bay from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each week brings new, different and fun-filled experiences, including music everywhere. — Karen Shughart, Life in the Finger Lakes magazine contributor

Will Ouweleen wears more hats than most can imagine, and yet, each one seems to fit. He may just be the most interesting man in the Finger Lakes.

The American Friends of Lafayette (AFL) are excited to announce that the National Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour will “arrive” in Rochester on Saturday, June 7, 2025 as part of a 4-stop tour in Monroe and Ontario Counties. The reenactment of Lafayette’s 1825 celebrated return visit begins at 11:30 a.m. as Lafayette disembarks from a boat at the Corn Hill Marina on the Genesee River. There will be a small brass band to welcome the general as he greets local dignitaries and citizens alike. He’ll next make a brief stop during the afternoon in the Hamlet of Mendon where the Rochester Committee will hand off the “Nation’s Guest” to the Canandaigua Committee just as it did two hundred years ago, as members of the community look on. The Canandaigua Committee is slated to host a parade and a dinner ball later in the evening. Finally, we’ve scheduled a morning reception at Pulteney Park in Geneva for Sunday morning, June 8, 2025 to see “Lafayette” off as he travels east enroute to further bicentennial celebrations.

The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) announced it has acquired 108 wooded acres from the estate of David Connolly in the town of Virgil, Cortland County. The “inholding” property is bordered on all sides by James Kennedy State Forest and serves as a buffer to the Finger Lakes Trail which traverses its southern boundary.

The FLLT intends to transfer the parcel to New York State as an addition to the state forest, adding to a block of protected lands in this area. This newly acquired property is also located near Greek Peak Mountain Resort and 250 privately owned acres protected with perpetual conservation easements held by the FLLT.

Visit Pittsford Fine Art on Friday, April 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. to meet Mark Stash, an oil and acrylic painter who loves to create local dynamic landscapes. Mark has always attempted to communicate his feelings of peace and contentment through the lens of capturing the natural world on canvas and paper. His oil and acrylic paintings bring to life the Finger Lakes Region, the Adirondacks and other Upstate New York landscapes that he finds beautiful and compelling.

Through February 19, a solo exhibition is open at Main Street Arts displaying the work of Canandaigua-based artist, Bradley Butler. Bradley Butler: The First Twenty will include 50 paintings from the first 20 years of the artist’s career, with at least one piece from each year 2005 to 2024. The retrospective exhibition shows the progression of Butler’s work, from a start in figurative paintings to his more recent abstract pieces. An element of darkness and mystery persists through each year of work, allowing for an exhibition that shows a cohesive evolution. The opening reception will take place from 3 to 6 pm, and is free and open to the public.

“Gratitude: The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” — Oxford Dictionary

Every morning while drinking my cup of tea I read from a booklet that contains daily meditations, inspirational tips and advice for living in a world where we are often bombarded with messages of doom and gloom. At the beginning of each issue there’s an essay that’s connected to the monthly theme, written by a spiritual guide, therapist or religious leader. This month, as is fitting as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, the theme is gratitude.
