NEW FIREWORKS LAW

In May 2025, a new Iowa law, Senate File 303, prevents cities and counties from banning or limiting the use of consumer fireworks on July 3, July 4, and December 31. While local governments can still regulate fireworks use on other days, they cannot impose restrictions on these three specific dates that are more restrictive than state regulations.

With the passage of this law, the City of George will allow the use of consumer grade fireworks on the following days this upcoming Freedom Day Celebration.
📌July 3, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
📌July 4, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

These allowances MUST occur on private property or the real property of a person who has consented to the use of fireworks on that property (Iowa Code 727.2).

While Iowa law allows limited use of consumer fireworks on July 3 & 4, the use of fireworks remains strictly prohibited on all public spaces within the City of George. This includes: city parks, public green spaces, recreational trails, city streets and sidewalks.

This year the City of George will host their annual Freedom Day Celebration Firework Show on Saturday, July 5 at the G-LR School grounds.

* Permitted Times for Fireworks according to the New Law:
July 3 and 4: Fireworks are permitted between 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM on both days.
Fireworks are also allowed between 9:00 AM on December 31 and 12:30 AM on January 1.
