The first Rockefeller Center Christmas tree wasn't a grand display, but a humble gesture during the Great Depression.

On Christmas Eve in 1931, a group of construction workers building Rockefeller Center decided to bring a little Christmas spirit to the muddy work site.

They pooled their money together to buy a 20-foot balsam fir.

Their decorations weren't fancy lights or shiny ornaments. They used what they had: strings of cranberries, handmade paper garlands, and even a few tin cans.

For a moment, these hardworking men stood around the simple tree, a small sign of hope during one of our nation's most difficult times.

There was no formal lighting ceremony or television broadcast. It was just a quiet celebration by the men who were raising a city from the ground up.

That one small act of holiday cheer, born out of tough times, grew into one of the most recognized Christmas traditions in the world. 🎄🛠️🇺🇸

It became an annual symbol of hope and the holiday spirit in New York City.

We have not long to love.
Light does not stay.
The tender things are those
we fold away.
Coarse fabrics are the ones
for common wear.
In silence I have watched you
comb your hair.
Intimate the silence,
dim and warm.
I could but did not, reach
to touch your arm.
I could, but do not, break
that which is still.
(Almost the faintest whisper
would be shrill.)
So moments pass as though
they wished to stay.
We have not long to love.
A night. A day.... ---Tennessee Williams
