My latest acquisition - an Otari MX5050 MKIII 8-track tape machine. This makes me so happy. Tape is often sought after for its saturation, which can be achieved in other ways, but for me, it’s the transient softening and slight flutter and wow that deliver the sound I associate with being “warm”, emotive, almost otherworldly. It’s what forgave minor pitchiness and timing inconsistencies in decades past before our ears became attuned to the cold hard reality of 1s and 0s being crunched 44,100 times per second, forcing us to find other ways to fill that stark, blank canvas with life. But in my opinion, nothing makes music move, modulate, and bloom like oxide particles trying their best to respond to electrical impulses directly transduced from physical sound waves.

Almost done mixing the upcoming live album of my old band . Last month, we tracked 16 songs live in front of a sold out crowd at Club Cafe. Great energy and a super cooperative audience who dutifully refrained from applause until the very end of each song. Excited to showcase a special night featuring some special guests and , and to finally add a live album to the Sunset Place Studio repertoire.

Brand new Behringer Wing installed at and ready to rock this Sunday.

I’m happy to say, at least from the 8 hours I’ve put into it, it lives up to all its claims. The routing and patching is an absolute game-changer. Only mixer I’ve ever used where renaming channels is as easy as renaming files on a computer. And the hardware emulations are pretty well on par with Waves and UAD equivalents. Dante support is solid despite having only been added a few months ago. It wasn’t that long ago that any product from the “B-word” was a kiss of death in pro audio, but color me impressed. If the X32 was the disruptive mixer of the last 10 years, this is the one for the next 10.

Two years ago around Thanksgiving, my dad and I began work on his solo album. Then COVID happened. And a studio move. And life in general. When we finally came back to it this summer, it was clear that we needed to re-record almost everything. You become a better musician, and anything you’ve been sitting on for too long becomes an obsolete portrait of your craft. Like so many good albums, it’s been through the ringer. But now it’s almost done, and the first single, “Redemption Road” drops soon.

I’m really looking forward to people getting to hear this. If you don’t know, my dad was a full-time songwriter in Nashville in the 80s who helped start the Bluebird Cafe writers community with Barbara Cloyd and worked alongside future Grammy winners. But in all those years of writing for other artists, the timing was never right for him to make an album of his own. I’m really proud of him for never giving up on that dream and putting up with endless delays, some of which were my fault! A true lesson in patience and persistence. When his album comes out, be sure to give it a listen and a like. It’s only been 40+ years in the making!

For custom drum tracks of any genre, Sunset Place Studio can be your one stop shop. After years of struggling to engineer from behind the kit, I’ve finally found a workflow that lets me import your tracks, load up a template for preamp levels and cue mixes, remote control everything from a laptop behind the kit, and get playing within about 5 minutes. From there, I can usually edit and process drums in less than 20 minutes. (Hint: save drum mixes and plug-in settings as templates, then use VU meters to bring clip gains up to 0db to compensate for levels across different songs) Less time spent engineering means lower rates for you, and more time actually making music!

Here are some big modern Nashville drums through our new Neve 1073OPX 8-channel preamp and Output Frontier monitors. Pretty thrilled with this setup!
