Well... this has been a surreal weekend.
The Box has now surpassed 15,000 views, 3,000 watch hours, 425+ likes, 107 comments, and has brought 143 new subscribers to Second Hand Productions in just 48 hours.
When we filmed this project last summer, I honestly had no idea how people would respond. Psychological slow-burn horror is a difficult genre to pull off, especially when the goal is to immerse the audience in one person's reality and ask them to question everything they've seen by the end.
The biggest surprise hasn't been the numbers. It's been the conversations.
Watching people debate the ending, discover clues they missed the first time, and come back for a second viewing has been incredibly rewarding. Some viewers immediately picked up on the symbolism, while others arrived at completely different interpretations. That was exactly the experience I hoped to create.
What makes these numbers even more meaningful is that they were earned organically.
Outside of announcing the premiere to a few Facebook groups and friends, there was no advertising, no paid promotion, and no artificial boost. By the end of the first day, Facebook represented less than 1% of the film's total traffic. Everything after that came from YouTube recommending the film through Browse and Suggested Videos.
Even more exciting, the analytics show the film is still being recommended. There is no way to know where the ceiling is or when things will begin to slow down, but it's been amazing to watch it continue finding new audiences on its own.
Seeing so many people embrace that style has been incredibly encouraging. It reminds me that audiences are willing to engage with challenging stories when filmmakers trust them to do their part.
None of this would have happened without an incredible cast and crew who believed in this project and poured their hearts into bringing it to life. I'm grateful to every person who watched, commented, shared the film, or recommended it to someone else.
If you haven't seen The Box yet, I'd encourage you to go in completely blind. Watch it all the way through before reading the comments, then come back and join the discussion. I'd genuinely love to hear your interpretation.
