Coach’s post game comments wtih WCLUSports.
Always good to start the season off with a victory.
We played well tonight. I think we learned a lot from the scrimmages, especially the Larue scrimmage. We didn’t play as well because they were very physical and we didn’t respond to that very well. And that’s why you scrimmage good teams, it helped us with the physicality of this game and I thought we rebounded the ball well, we hit some free throws, we made some plays, madesome shots. I would like for us to rebound the ball a little bit better, there was one stretch where we gave up some offensive rebounds and we gotta guard a little bit better. Green County’s #5 is hard to guard and you gotta make some guys do some different things sometimes.
This is a totally different team this year but Pippen and Byrd, who didn’t play last year, combined for 26 points. Kade had a great game and he’s In a completely different role this year. He was good running our team, making passes to the right guys in the right spots. But I thought Cameron, Jaxson, and Maddox gave us a big lift. Carson got on the glass. All those guys gave us a big lift at different times in the game
Kade will be the leader this year. He’s been that guy every day. He’s taken ownership of our team, being a leader. You never know when guys will do that and sometimes they have to. I couldn’t be more proud of him because he practices like that every day and he makes sure everybody is on board and knows what they are doing. He’s been a great leader. He’s gonna have great season because his mind is in such a good place, his body language & things that have held him back in the past, he’s matured and moved past all of that.
Sophomores Weston Shelton and Maddox Griggs, both those guys scoring 9 tonight. It’s a big adjustment not having played much at the varsity level. Weston needs to slow down a bit, he goes 100 mph most of the time and he just needs to learn to play with some pace and he will, he’s a good player. He can score it. Maddox does some good things. He dove on the ball, he takes charges, he makes shots, he does so many different things. Those guys are gonna be good players for us the next 3 years.
Despite losing 4 starters from last years team, we have a lot of depth on this year’s team. All 9 guys can contribute. We can play a bigger line up. We have some things we need to clean up defensively especially in man. But it was a good opener for us.
We executed well and got to the free throw line 37 times tonight, making 29 of those. We didn’t do that well in the scrimmage the other day but we took advantage of this being a physical game and made the free throws.
