Kentucky Coal Facilities Receive $124 Million in Federal Upgrades

Staff Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kentucky coal-fired power plants are set to receive more than $124 million in federal funding as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at modernizing energy infrastructure and strengthening the nation’s electric grid.

The announcement was made Thursday at the White House, where President Donald Trump outlined nearly $1 billion in investments for coal-related energy projects across the country. U.S. Congressman Andy Barr of Lexington attended the event and praised the funding package as a major boost for Kentucky’s energy sector.

The Kentucky projects will provide funding for improvements at facilities operated by Eastern Kentucky Power Cooperative and Duke Energy Kentucky. The upgrades are planned for coal-fired generating stations located in Boone, Lawrence and Pulaski counties.

Supporters of the investment say the funding will help preserve reliable power generation while improving efficiency at existing facilities that serve hundreds of thousands of Kentucky homes and businesses.

Barr said coal remains a critical component of the nation’s energy portfolio and argued that dependable electricity generation will become increasingly important as power demands continue to grow.

“Coal is not just part of Kentucky’s past, it is a key to our future,” Barr said. “Clean, beautiful Kentucky coal can be a centerpiece of America’s energy dominance, create good-paying jobs and help us win the race for AI against China.”

Fifth District Congressman Hal Rogers also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefits for Eastern Kentucky communities and the role coal continues to play in providing affordable electricity.

Eastern Kentucky Power Cooperative President and CEO Don Mosier thanked federal officials for the investment, saying the funding will support employment opportunities while helping maintain dependable electric service for cooperative members throughout the state.

Industry leaders also applauded the decision. The Kentucky Coal Association said the investment recognizes coal’s ongoing importance to energy security, grid reliability and domestic job creation.

The funding marks one of the largest recent federal commitments to Kentucky’s coal-fired power infrastructure and reflects continued efforts by federal officials to support traditional energy production while upgrading existing generation facilities.
