This week, on Another Place, you can hear the rare if not singular recording of Fred Anderson, Paul Lytton and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. This tenor saxophone, drums and bass trio should not be missed.

From their sold-out performance on Aug. 23, 2006, at the Hideout, in Chicago, here, on WDCB Listener-Supported Jazz & Blues:

Baba Fred moved on
whispered a tipster
in Grant Park tonight
why steamy air hugged
Spirit of Music Garden

imagined chords from
Albin Polasek’s goddess
all but begged on a lyre
for a tenor saxophonist
of his bronze stature

l pictured him facing her
his upright caterpillar
prole to her aristo self
blue-collar saxophone
levered to unseen mass

cast that cat on a pillar
who crouched for the cause
the Lady of Music needs
a duettist from Bronzeville
Beauty’s BFF Fred Anderson

2

butterflies both world-wise
and learning the ropes
bruiser big or diminutive
took turns resting a spell
on my Duke Ellington t-shirt

replaced should they slip away
by new brethren landing
one grooved motionlessly
on the first Ducal word
“jazz is above all total

freedom to express oneself”
did they sip through fabric
a world known to them
of bells worth sippin’ at
in Spirit of Music Garden

sweat tasted that good
when Fred sipped saxoon
his notes played the stripes
on sheet music wallpaper
till air hugged them away

3

kaleidoscoping
butterflies took to him
one velvet beauty
respecting another
convention of sippers

tongue after nectar
mouth on the reed
monarch orange
obstinate black
the air hugged back

Fred left some gold too
horn anticipating
mouth to pull color from
9 a.m. on the dot
the day after he split

might butterflies es**rt
other chrysalises
to new velvet places
and gold of their own
Baba Fred moved on
