Dr. Marie Y. Lemelle, PhD has earned a place in Experiencing the Seven Principles: A Kwanzaa Anthology—a powerful, culturally significant collection celebrating the wisdom, creativity, and living legacy of Kwanzaa.

This anthology embodies Nguzo Saba, the Swahili phrase meaning "seven principles," which guide this book of the African heritage celebration from December 26 to January 1—unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith—told through the voices of artists and writers committed to preserving our cultural genius.

Join me and my dear friend and fellow humanitarian, doctorate graduate, and South African Ambassador as we commemorate December 16, South Africa’s Day of Reconciliation 🇿🇦 and extend its meaning into a Month of Reconciliation, recognizing the many reasons our world continues to need healing.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized, South Africa’s democratic foundation was built on choosing healing over vengeance. This year's theme “Reaffirming Reconciliation for Future Generations,” reminds South Africa that December 16 remains a powerful moment to confront painful history honestly, including the Battle of Ncome and the legacy of Sharpeville, Langa, Boipatong, and the political violence of the 1980s and 1990s, while committing to a shared and peaceful future.

Reconciliation is not a single day. It is an ongoing process that calls us to address inequality, poverty, corruption, crime, and gender-based violence, and to strengthen families and communities. This month, and beyond, we reflect, we honor, and we recommit to building a future grounded in dignity, justice, and unity.

Hanukkah highlights the beauty of holding onto hope when challenges feel overwhelming.

It honors the strength that rises when a community believes in the power of perseverance and shared faith.

Each candle sparks a reminder that light has the ability to grow, spread, and overcome the darkest moments. The celebration teaches us that resilience is built one small act of courage at a time.

Hanukkah began at sundown on Sunday, December 14, 2025 and ends with nightfall on Monday, December 22, 2025. The gold candelabrum whose seven branches, representing creation and the tree of life, were meant to be kept burning every night as a symbol of God’s light.
