Former Patriots OL Ryan O’Callaghan, who came out as gay after his playing career in 2017, said that during his football career, he never heard anything as anti-gay and homophobic as what TreVeyon Henderson said this week in support of Jaden Ivey, and believes Henderson was offensive enough to be released by New England.
Henderson cited multiple scriptures on social media after the Bulls released Ivey for speaking out against the LGBTQ community and the NBA’s Pride Nights, and O’Callaghan believes it crossed a line.
“Not even close. Every team I’ve ever been on, college and both NFL teams, there were always the religious guys. They’d do things like hand out personalized Bibles. But it was never like this,” O’Callaghan said.
If he had heard something like it when he was playing in the NFL, O’Callaghan said he’d try to get his teammate some psychological help.
“The first thing I would do is find information about a sports psychologist and discreetly leave it in his locker.”
O’Callaghan said Henderson’s position makes him expendable.
“Running backs are the most replaceable people there are.”
