The Baystars U12 Whitecaps made team history recently by placing first in the FSCI Labor Day Tournament in Fredericksburg, capturing the first tournament championship in the team’s history.

The tournament opened Saturday morning where the Whitecaps faced the Stafford Revolution. The Whitecaps trailed their opponent, 4-2, late in the second half, but they were able to fight their way back to win, 6-5. Ryan Seay and Colton Bergstrom each recorded hat tricks with one of Seay’s goals assisted by Wyatt Brockenbrough. Goalkeepers Triffon Luechauer and Lux Despinis combined for 10 saves.

Following an extended weather delay, the Whitecaps returned to the field Saturday afternoon for a shortened match against Cville United FC. With only 30 minutes of play and no halftime, the Whitecaps earned a 4-1 victory. Donnie Wolford scored twice, followed by Ronen Lane and Noah Ford with one goal each. Seay contributed two assists, while Luechauer assisted Ford’s goal.

Tail wags and happy faces filled the room at Bay Aging’s Mathews Active Lifestyle Center during a recent visit from a pair of special four-legged guests. Participants enjoyed a heartwarming visit from Canine Companions therapy dog Canto, accompanied by his owners Tom and Vivian Steuterman of North, as well as Kobe, a future service dog currently being raised for Canine Companions by Tiffany Gordon, Director of Mathews Social Services.

“There’s a special kind of magic that happens when dogs walk through our doors,” said Laura Matthews, Mathews Active Lifestyle Manager. “Seeing the pure joy and bright smiles on participants’ faces reminds us just how powerful that unconditional connection really is.” Tom is shown here holding Canto’s leash while Vivian is with Kobe.

The Gloucester chapter of the Future Farmers of America traveled to Virginia Tech June 8-11 to compete in the 100th annual Virginia FFA State Convention. Chapter advisor Renee Hypes and GHS NJROTC instructor Captain Norris Merkle accompanied the 19 students.

Hypes was recognized as Outstanding Agriculture Educator of the Year and celebrated the 25th anniversary of her state officer team.

GHS applied for the national chapter award and was named a superior chapter, receiving a silver rating. Also, Grace Setterholm received her state degree, the highest degree that any member can receive from Virginia FFA. In addition, Natalie Walke took the opportunity to run for Virginia FFA state office and Taylor Lewis and Eastin Hogge volunteered for the Courtesy Corps where they assisted with the crops competition.

Parishioners and friends of Abingdon Episcopal Church in White Marsh provided 60 fried chicken dinners to homebound Gloucester County residents last Monday during the Labor Day holiday. Lending a hand were, front row from left, Cindy Parker, Janet Joyce, Kelly Dalton, Nancy Choquette; back row, Judy Cannon, Joanne Burruss, Joyce Mallon, Rilee Dalton, Samantha Smith, Justin Dalton, Keith Webb, Rene Welz, John Capin and June James. The vocal chamber ensemble New York Polyphony will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Arts at Abingdon Concert Series at Abingdon Episcopal Church, 4645 George Washington Memorial Highway, Gloucester.

Admission is free, and a free-will offering will be accepted. No reservations are required. A free w**e and cheese reception will follow the concert in the parish hall.

New York Polyphony has been critically acclaimed by The New Yorker for its “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts,” said a press release. The group’s innovative programming ranges from Gregorian chants to contemporary commissions, and its focus on familiar and rare works of the 12th to 17th centuries “has helped bring early music to modern audiences.”

Family of Choice, a provider of counseling and wellness services, has moved to a larger office at 3073 George Washington Memorial Highway in Hayes, after serving the community from its previous location in Hayes for the past three years.

Owned by Danielle Carson, LPC, LMFT, Family of Choice has continued to grow and now has eight providers offering counseling, coaching and wellness services. The practice is also welcoming Chelsea Choi, Resident in Counseling, to the team.

With the larger space and growing provider team, Family of Choice currently has immediate openings for new clients for therapy and coaching, and accepts most major commercial insurance plans for therapy.

The 52nd annual Mathews Market Days will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in and around the historic court green located on Court Street in downtown Mathews.

There will be plenty of musical entertainment, as well as the annual pet parade and street dance, a car show, and children’s activities, said a press release. Sixty-nine arts and crafts vendors, 17 information booths, and 13 food vendors will be on hand to slake every need.

Market Days posters will be available for purchase, and winners of the third annual Miss Mathews Pageant will be walking around to meet and greet the public.

It’s that time again when the cake ladies and gentlemen have been mixing, stirring and baking cakes for the annual Guinea Heritage Association cake sale. The event will be held at Buck’s Store Museum in Bena this Saturday, Sept. 12, as a lead-up to the Guinea Jubilee on Sept. 25 and 26. Those with a sweet tooth can have it sated immediately by pulling out their wallets and purchasing a cake.

Most cakes will be sold whole, but half cakes and slices will also be offered.

A feral cat found on Sept. 4 on Maryus Road in Gloucester has tested positive for the rabies virus, and the Three Rivers Health District is asking that anyone who handled the cat or has information about exposure contact the Gloucester County Health Department.

Exposure to the virus would involve being bitten or scratched by the cat or coming into contact with its saliva by an open wound or through the eyes, nose, or mouth, said a press release. Exposure could also include direct contact between a pet or other animals and the cat.
