Mission Blue, an organization established by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, has named the Chesapeake Bay a Hope Spot, making it number 166 in a worldwide network of marine areas Earle and her global coalition are working to protect.

The designation followed an Explorers Club Flag Expedition that came to Gwynn’s Island last month to revisit and update Gilbert Klingel’s 1954 National Geographic expedition titled “100 Hours Beneath the Chesapeake.”

Stan Grice of the Mathews Land Conservancy, which hosted a gathering for expedition members and the public, said that Gwynn’s Island and the tributaries contributing to its waterways will serve as a research site for the future, as well.

After learning about an elementary school that was destroyed by a tornado, the Gloucester High School Renaissance Leadership class jumped into action to help provide relief.

London Elementary School in Kentucky was devastated by a tornado on May 16, inspiring these GHS students to hold a donation drive. Many students connected this disaster to their memory of the tornado that destroyed Page Middle School in 2011, according to renaissance teacher Beth Coleman.

An annual Pound Cake Contest entered the conversation eight years ago when the first annual May Faire, a spring heritage festival, was held in Mathews. As time progressed features and programs of the event, sponsored by the Mathews Museum, were changed annually. But one part of that first Faire proved to be so successful it has been featured each year: The Pound Cake Contest.
