🦃 On This Day in History

On November 26, 1789, President George Washington - a Virginian- issued the nation’s first presidential proclamation, calling for a Day of National Thanksgiving. He urged Americans to give thanks for “the many signal favors of Almighty God,” especially the chance to establish a government for their safety and happiness.

The Thanksgiving tradition itself also began in Virginia: in 1619, settlers at Berkeley Hundred ordained that the day of their arrival be kept annually as a day of thanksgiving to God- making Virginia the birthplace of the American Thanksgiving tradition.

Later, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln reaffirmed the custom by proclaiming the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving- laying the foundation for the holiday we observe today.

From Virginia’s earliest observances to Washington’s proclamation, the spirit of Thanksgiving has endured as a moment for gratitude, reflection, and unity. 🇺🇸
