In this episode of Cape Ann Conversations, host Troy Scarbrough welcomed Essex resident and coffee enthusiast Rob Fitzgibbons, the founder behind a growing coffee cupping experience business. Drawing on his background as a user experience designer, Rob has transformed a simple at-home tasting with friends into a sought-after program for libraries and community centers, helping people slow down, pay attention, and truly experience their coffee. What started as a fun experiment shared on a local listserv quickly turned into regular invitations from libraries and organizations across the region.

Rob’s cuppings are interactive, 90-minute sessions that feel like a wine tasting—but for coffee. Participants learn how coffee is grown, processed, roasted, and labeled (think fair trade, organic, and more), then blind-taste three different coffees while using a flavor wheel to describe what they smell and taste. The result is part education, part team-building: people compare notes, laugh, and leave more connected—and caffeinated. Rob now offers cuppings for corporate teams, boards, weddings, showers, and special events, providing a memorable, non-alcoholic experience that’s both affordable and low-risk (“much safer than axes and whiskey,” as he jokes). If you’re coffee-curious or looking for a unique group experience, you can reach Rob through coffeecuppings.com or by calling 978-317-1640.

If you would like to experience a coffee cupping in person, a free session is being held on January 6 from 1:30 - 2:30 PM at the Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester. Registration is required for this free event.

Founded in 2005, the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) was created by concerned community members and parents in response to budget cuts in Gloucester Public Schools, particularly affecting arts, music, theater, and STEM programs. Over the past two decades, GEF has grown from a grassroots effort into a fully staffed organization, raising $10.5 million, with most funds directly benefiting Gloucester schools.

On this episode of Cape Ann Conversations, Emily Siegel, Executive Director, talks about how the GEF supports education. The GEF primarily funds teacher-driven grants, supporting innovative programs in classrooms, after-school programs, and summer initiatives. The foundation awards approximately 25 grants per year, covering various subjects and students’ needs.

Joining Emily on the podcast is Jessica Magiotta, Power of Play Chairperson for 2025. Jessica, a GEF volunteer, is passionate about the Power of Play event, which is on Sunday, March 23, at the Gloucester High School Field House from 11 AM to 2 PM. Jessica provides a detailed overview of activities that will be offered on Sunday.

Also participating in the podcast is Arts Festival Coordinator Toni Waldron, who is equally passionate about this important community event. Toni discusses the importance of the Arts Festival and how the experience will be elevated through the inclusion of food trucks, musical performances, and hands-on activities. The Art Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, from 11 AM to 3 PM at O'Maley Middle School.

March 13, 2025 - S2 E10: It has been just 3 years since Clay Kern and his wife Jen took the leap into business ownership when they purchased the long-standing Bearskin Neck kayak business, North Shore Kayak. Since then, they have been very busy expanding and growing the business.

Holding a Masters degree in Marine & Environmental Science, Clay has a passion for teaching and helping people connect to the natural world. In addition to renting kayaks, North Shore Adventures offers guided tours out of Rockport Harbor to Straightmouth and Thacher Islands, as well as mobile tours out of Gloucester, Ipswich, and Essex. All tour guides are trained in the biology and history of the area.

For those not inclined to be on the water, they also offer beach cruiser bike rentals and ebike rentals. They have even developed a self-guided bike tour that takes people to places of interest while they listen to tour info on their phone.

Taking technology one step further in 2025, North Shore Adventures is introducing Escape Cape Ann, an augmented reality experience through an iPad. Several adventure options will be available that take players around Rockport, solving puzzles and riddles through use of a toolkit. Clay plans on involving other local businesses as part of the challenge.

If you want to look for a silver lining from the months of being cooped up during the Covid pandemic, look no further than The Lobster Roller.

During the Covid lockdown, former television news and sports reporter Jessica Moran came to realize that it was time for a change. Inspired by her husband’s career change to lobster fishing, she decided to try her hand at his idea of a lobster roll food truck. Thus, in the summer of 2021, The Lobster Roller made its first appearance as a “food trailer” on the local scene. While the Lobster Roller started small (just in case she didn’t like it), in addition to their well-known red Lobster Roller food truck, they also have a brick and mortar take-out storefront in Rockport.

Over the years, their offerings have grown to include more than lobster rolls and clam chowder (hot dogs, grilled cheese, smash burgers, fries and more), and last year they introduced hot buttered lobster rolls in addition to the cold mayo rolls. Which one do you think is most popular? (You have to watch to find out!) Hot off the press - this year look forward to the addition of new lobster roll with a spicy mayo!
