Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Taking our time on this step and lighting install to make sure everything is done correctly the first time. On this build we are installing across this 24’ step and not just because they look awesome but also because the riser lights create a safe well lit staircase for those late night gatherings.

Working with scalloped deck boards and Cortex plugs? Here’s one trick that makes installs cleaner, faster, and way more dialed in.

On this Trex Cinnamon Cove build, we hacked a simple aluminum speed square by pre-drilling it to use as a repeatable template for every Cortex screw and color-matched plug. No guessing, no wandering lines, just perfectly spaced fasteners every time. It speeds up installs, keeps everything looking razor clean, and gives the finished deck that high-end pro detail clients actually notice. Small trick. Big difference.

We also use deck boards for the fascia instead of traditional fascia material for a more seamless modern finish. This detail features a 2x8 frame band with one ripped deck board above and a full deck board below.

What do you think of this look?

Demolishing an early 20th century wood deck to make way for a modern low-maintenance outdoor living space. 👊🏼

This rebuild will feature:
• steel support posts
• modern structural upgrades
• composite decking
• hidden fasteners
• under-deck waterproofing system
• low-maintenance finishes built to last

Old-growth lumber definitely had character… but after decades of moisture, movement, and weather exposure, it was time for a fresh start.

We’re combining old-school craftsmanship with modern materials and build science to create a cleaner, stronger, longer-lasting deck system for the next generation.

Sometimes the best builds start with demo. 💥

Laying out the frame the right way 👇

Running treated lumber joists and setting joist hangers, but the key move here is snapping a clean line across the front.

That line becomes your reference so every joist lands perfectly in place and the whole deck runs dead straight and square.

It’s simple… but this is the difference between a deck that looks good and one that looks dialed in 🔥
