🏡 What Should You Expect When Visiting a Breeder? 🐾
Bringing home a puppy starts long before pickup day. One of the best things a prospective puppy owner can do is visit the breeder and see firsthand how the dogs are raised.
When visiting a breeder, here are a few things you should expect to see:
✔️ Healthy, happy dogs
The dogs should appear well-fed, energetic, and comfortable in their environment. Their coats should be clean, eyes bright, and overall condition well maintained.
✔️ A clean home and kennel area
No kennel is spotless 100% of the time—dogs live there—but the environment should be clean, sanitary, and well cared for. Fresh water, clean bedding, and proper fencing should all be present.
✔️ Clean grooming and care areas
Whether it’s a grooming room, whelping area, or kennel space, these areas should be organized and maintained with the dogs’ health and safety in mind.
✔️ Well-socialized dogs
The dogs should be comfortable around people and show stable temperaments. They don’t all need to be outgoing social butterflies, but they should not appear neglected or fearful.
✔️ The opportunity to meet adult dogs
While you may not always meet both parents (many breeders use outside stud dogs), you should be able to meet the mother when appropriate and often other related dogs that help represent the breeder’s program.
✔️ Health testing documentation
A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss the health testing performed on their breeding dogs and explain why those tests matter for the breed.
✔️ Documentation and health records
A responsible breeder should provide appropriate documentation for their puppies, including registration paperwork, veterinary records, age-appropriate vaccinations, and a written contract. Puppies should be examined by a veterinarian prior to placement, and many breeders also microchip their puppies for permanent identification.
✔️ Questions from the breeder
A good breeder isn’t just interviewing you—you should expect them to ask questions too. Responsible breeders care deeply about where their puppies are going and want to ensure a good match.
✔️ A lifetime commitment
The relationship shouldn’t end when you take your puppy home. A reputable breeder remains available for guidance, support, and is willing to take their dogs back if circumstances ever change.
🚩 What you should NOT expect:
❌ Dozens of puppies constantly available
❌ Dogs that appear unhealthy or neglected
❌ A breeder unwilling to answer questions
❌ No proof of health testing
❌ No contract or health records provided
❌ Pressure to buy immediately
❌ A breeder who disappears after the sale
At the end of the day, you’re not just choosing a puppy—you’re choosing the breeder behind that puppy. The right breeder will be just as invested in your success as you are.
❤️ A well-bred puppy begins with a breeder who cares about every stage of that puppy’s life, from birth to forever home.
