Goldthwaite freshman Walt Thompson followed Monday’s 1-under-par 70 with a 74 Tuesday and won the UIL Class 2A boys golf medalist title by one shot at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
Thompson, who began playing golf at age 5, shot a two-day, 36-hole score of 144 – one shot ahead of Ty Chrisman of Centerville and Isaiah Igo of Sundown. Igo won a playoff for the silver medal behind Thompson.
Thompson became Goldthwaite’s first outright state champion medalist. In 2019 when Goldthwaite won the Class 2A boys’ golf team championship, the Eagles’ Drew Hermesmeyer tied for the medalist title but lost in a playoff to Trevor Roquemore of Douglass.
Thompson essentially won his medalist title over the last three holes Tuesday, including a par 4 on No. 16, which routinely produces bogeys and double bogeys for high school players. Thompson then birdied No. 17 and parred No. 18 to finish 1-under-par over the final three holes.
Chrisman faltered earlier in the day with a quadruple bogey. Thompson took a double bogey on his first hole Tuesday, but quickly overcame it.
Sonora won the Class 2A boys team championship with a two-day score of 626, Mason of District 29-2A finished sixth at 666, and San Saba was 10th at 708.
