Hearing about this on the news this morning, it seemed appropriate to share with you as this is disturbing to say the least, the dangers of AI-TOYS.

Child advocacy and consumer watchdog groups, including Fairplay and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund, have recently issued press releases and annual reports warning parents about the potential dangers of AI-powered toys.

Key Warnings and Concerns

Inappropriate Content: Testing of several AI toys found that they could generate content inappropriate for children, including in-depth discussions of sexually explicit topics and instructions for dangerous activities like how to light matches.

Privacy and Data Collection: The toys often collect sensitive data, such as children's voices, names, dates of birth, and personal preferences. This information may be sent to the cloud, raising significant privacy concerns. Some toys also feature optional facial recognition.

Developmental and Mental Health Impacts: Experts worry about the long-term impact on a child's development and mental health, suggesting these "companion" toys may displace essential human-to-human interactions and hinder the development of creativity and problem-solving skills built through traditional imaginative play.

False Sense of Trust: Young children are developmentally susceptible to forming trust and relationships with friendly characters, which these toys are designed to exploit, potentially making them more vulnerable to the harms mentioned above.
Lack of Regulation: The AI toy market currently has very little regulation compared to traditional toys, and parental controls are often limited or nonexistent.

Specific Actions and Recommendations

Avoid AI Toys: Fairplay, endorsed by over 150 experts, has explicitly headlined its advisory as "AI Toys are NOT safe for kids" and recommends parents avoid purchasing them this holiday season.

Manufacturer Response: Following the U.S. PIRG report, one manufacturer of a specific AI teddy bear (Kumma Teddy) suspended sales and removed AI-enabled toys from the market for a safety audit.

Shop Reputably: The Toy Association, representing manufacturers, advises parents to only buy from reputable toymakers and retailers who adhere to federal safety standards like the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Check for Recalls: CoPIRG also warns parents to check for recalled toys, as they found it was still possible to purchase them on online marketplaces. The Consumer Product Safety Commission website is recommended for checking recall information.

They are such gentle creatures. We were kayaking and one came up to my kayak. I thought he or she would tip it over but all she was wants is to cuddle a little bit. So I petted it and it rolled over and opened its mouth. So, I poured by water. How many rules did I break? But it was fun.

Tidbits
If you think you are smarter than the previous generation. 50 years ago, the owner’s manual of a car showed you how to adjust the valves. Today it warns you not to drink the contents of the battery.
Some call if multi-tasking, I call it doing something else while I try to remember what I was doing in the first place.

Why did you fire your secretary, asked Lars.
Well, Ole said, it was this way. She just couldn’t spell. She kept asking me how to spell every other word she was taking when I was talking. Then Lars said, I suppose you couldn’t take all those interruptions.
Ole said, No, it really wasn’t that. I just didn’t have time to look up all those words in the dictionary.
