Imagine you had $100 to spend on food for an entire month. There would be no more money coming and there would be no food from any place else. This $100 is it. How would the knowledge that you had a fixed amount of money impact your buying decisions? How would it impact the activities you choose to do, e.g. eating out or cooking at home? [ 321 more words ]

Recently, our nation's President met with his advisors. Each person took turns saying how honored they are to serve the agenda of Mr. Trump. The remarks were so overwhelmingly pleasant that most news outlets have commented on the flattery. It got me thinking about two questions: 1. What are the most important characteristics you need in a friend that you may not prioritize… [ 145 more words ]

Caricatures are unique among artistic expressions. They give you just enough of a picture of someone for you to recognize who the artist intends you to see but there are clear distortions and exaggerations that fit the emotional response the artist intends to illicit. There are two ways to learn—through your own experiences and through someone else's. Consider these verses: "I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw" - Proverbs 24:32 "Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise" - Proverbs 6:6 "My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe… [ 481 more words ]

What if you had two right hands or two left feet? What if all ice cream tasted like vanilla? What if everyone thought and acted just the same? Not only would life be boring but also much more difficult and less productive. Think about your 3 closest friends. Are they all alike? No. In fact, if you had to give a one word description of each one it would show their diversity. [ 299 more words ]

I had just got my car washed and was finishing up vacuuming out the seats when I saw it—my son's handprint on the otherwise clean car. Just as my blood was reaching 212° F I heard this familiar phrase in my heart, "Wear it as a loose garment." Its a phrase I've heard many times before. It reminds us that just like we can easily slip in or out of a clothing garment we should not love anything in this world so much that we hesitate to part from it if and when the time comes. For those who are not NBA basketball fans, I need to lay some groundwork: Phil Jackson is the hall of fame coach who led (or depending on who you ask was just along for the ride for) the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships and later was head coach for five more NBA Championships with the likes of Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and Pau Gasol. If you've been a parent for any length of time then you'd have to admit that your little "angel" sometimes says or does things she shouldn't. If you're really honest you'd admit that, more than you'd like, you find yourself wondering, "What am I going to do with this child?" Kids lie. Kids break things. Kids say mean things. Kids don't appreciate things. [ 401 more words ]

President Donald John Trump was installed as President of the United States on Friday, January 20, 2017. In his 16 minute inauguration speech he outlined his vision for America and the world. Who does a child call for when they are scared or hurt? "Mommy!" "Daddy!" Instinctively, a child looks for the person that can protect them and keep them safe. It's official—the 45th President of the United States of America will be Donald J. Trump. The campaign has been polarizing and vitriolic no matter whose side you were on. But for the 74.5 million African Americans (88% of whom voted for Hillary Clinton; 8% of whom voted for Donald Trump), the election was not just a surprise but something more difficult to put into words and far more sad. Think back to First Century Jerusalem. There Jesus is, surrounded by a mob of Pharisees, Sadducees and disciples. The question is, "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” Jesus takes a look around, seeing in the audience a mix of the faithful and the faint-at-heart, discerning the trap while simultaneously allowing the wisdom of God to speak through Him.
