Charlie is a baseball writer, historian, and cultural commentator whose work highlights the people and places that define the game’s enduring impact.

Introducing the Arizona Baseball Trail

Well before Arizona was a state, baseball played a significant role in the region’s social, recreational and economic development. Even while the Indian wars raged and outlaws roamed the territory, there was baseball.

A new program called the Arizona Baseball Trail celebrates that legacy.

The Trail will be a self-guided tour of landmark sites that not only tells the story of pioneer baseball, but also the rowdy and competitive mining leagues, the barnstorming days of Major League Baseball, the rich legacy of championship high school and college programs, the beginnings of the Cactus League and the current era of sprawling baseball campuses that support a billion-dollar industry.

The trail begins with a “Starting Nine” list of historic sites that played a critical role in the development of Arizona baseball.

Additional sites will be added in the future. The plan is to celebrate each location with a plaque, a web page description and a place on the Arizona Baseball Trail map.

Participants who follow the trail will discover fresh insights into America’s Pastime and a mosaic of frontier landmarks, hidden gems and living history that tell the story of both Arizona and baseball.

Look for the first landmark dedication along the trail coming soon to Prescott.

I recently bought this book for $18 at a second-hand book store. It is really amazing and wanted to share!!

‘The Treasures of Major League Baseball’ is written by Dan Rosen and the Editors of Major League Baseball

From the back cover:

The Treasures of Major League Baseball tells the rich and fascinating history of baseball through hundreds of photographs and an exhaustively researched and evocative text. The origin and evolution of the sport are explored, as are the great players, famous games and idiosyncrasies such as team owners, broadcasters and collectors of baseball souvenirs.

But where this title really flies beyond the outfield fence is in its awe-inspiring collection of more than 30 facsimiles of momentous baseball memorabilia, including historical letters, a full-size poster, ticket stubs, programs and rare baseball cards, which jump from the pages.

This highly collectible interactive book lets you, the fan, experience the thrill of baseball’s heritage through three dimensional facsimiles of rare baseball artifacts.

The Beer Baseball Blog Story

Welcome to the Beer Baseball Blog. I am a child of the ‘70s who grew up collecting baseball cards, drawing team logos and listening to Vin Scully on AM radio. These days, I’m a seasoned graphic designer with a teenage son and a very supportive girlfriend named Melissa.

Melissa and I run a Creative Content Marketing & Solutions Agency called Nerdy Connections in Pasadena, CA. We have many great clients. One of them is named ‘Tap & Cheer’ that runs Craft Beer events with the Los Angeles Brewers Guild. We were exposed to many great craft breweries from San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Through those connections, we traveled to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oregon, Nevada, Massachusetts, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and New York to enjoy more fantastic craft beers and meet the great people that brew it.

It was when we were at The Tap Room at Chase Field in Phoenix in 2015 that we came up with the concept to combine my love of baseball with my new love of craft beer. The Beer Baseball Blog idea was born. It took a year to develop, and we launched April 2016 with a website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube page.

My goals are: 1) Create a fun and supportive community. 2) Have a place to share my past baseball experiences and future baseball adventures. 3) Share artwork, logos, and pictures from baseball’s past and present. 4) Sample craft beer, eat great food and share the fantastic artwork from ballparks and/or breweries from around the world. 5) Make and share my own artwork.
