Parents, are you tired of being the one who always has to keep it together?

The one who remembers the appointments, manages the schedules, solves the problems, comforts the tears, and keeps the household running, even when you're running on empty.

Emotional exhaustion isn't always obvious. Sometimes it looks like feeling disconnected, having less patience, struggling to focus, or simply feeling like you have nothing left to give at the end of the day.

If that's where you are right now, take a moment and hear this: you don't have to be strong every second of every day.

It's okay to admit you're tired.
It's okay to need support.
It's okay to take a break before you reach your limit.

You are carrying a lot, and your feelings are valid. Caring for yourself is not taking away from your family. It's helping you have the energy and emotional capacity to continue caring for the people you love.

You deserve care, too. 💜

As parents, we often put pressure on ourselves to say the right thing, have the perfect response, or always know what to do. But what children remember most isn't perfection. It's how they felt in our presence.

Did they feel safe when they made a mistake?
Did they feel heard when they had big emotions?
Did they feel loved, even on the hard days?

The way we respond, comfort, listen, and show up consistently helps build the sense of security our children carry with them as they grow.

Today, give yourself permission to focus less on having all the right words and more on creating moments of connection. Those moments matter more than you may realize. 💜

Does your child struggle with angry outbursts, frustration, or expressing their feelings with words?

Imagine if, by the end of the summer, your child could:
✔ Pause before reacting
✔ Use words to express feelings
✔ Recover from disappointment more quickly
✔ Feel more confident with peers
✔ Reduce angry outbursts at home

Our Summer Strong: Building Confidence, Calm & Connection individual therapy series for youth ages 9–13 combines Social Emotional Learning (SEL), emotional regulation skills, and Solution-Focused Goal Tracking to help children recognize their growth one step at a time.

Instead of focusing only on what's going wrong, we'll ask:
💭 "What went a little better this week?"
💭 "How did you use your words?"
💭 "What helped you stay calm?"
💭 "What would move you from a 4 to a 5 this week?

Small changes create big growth.

A child who yelled 5 times this week and 3 times next week is making progress.

A child who uses one coping skill instead of none is making progress.

A child who asks for help instead of having an outburst is making progress.

🌱 That's the kind of growth we celebrate.

“Attention-seeking.”
Or… a child asking:
“Do you see me? Do I feel safe with you? Am I important right now?”

Many behaviors we label as “bad,” “dramatic,” or “manipulative” are actually bids for connection. Children often communicate through behavior before they have the words, regulation, or emotional insight to communicate through language.

✨ Reframing behavior changes how we respond.

Here are 3 common examples:

• A child constantly interrupting your conversations
➡️ This may be a bid for reassurance, attention, or closeness.

• A child acting out more after school or daycare
➡️ Their nervous system may finally feel safe enough to release stress, overwhelm, or emotional exhaustion.

• A child whining, clinging, or melting down during transitions
➡️ This can reflect anxiety, disconnection, difficulty with change, or a need for co-regulation.

When we only punish the behavior, we may miss the need underneath it.

Therapy can help children and parents:
💜 Understand the meaning behind behaviors
💜 Strengthen emotional regulation and attachment
💜 Reduce power struggles and increase connection
💜 Build healthier communication patterns within the family
💜 Support parents in responding with confidence instead of burnout

Children don’t always need “more discipline.”
Sometimes they need support, safety, structure, and connection.

At Sankofa Family Counseling & Wellness, we help families shift from surviving behaviors to understanding them through a trauma-informed and attachment-focused lens.

✨ Parenthood changed everything… including your relationship. ✨

You love your baby.

But lately, you may also feel exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, frustrated, or unsure how to support each other through it all.

Sleepless nights.
Mood changes.
Stress.
Anxiety.
Feeling touched out, emotionally distant, or constantly irritated.

Many new parents silently struggle while trying to “hold it all together.”

The truth is:
Transitioning into parenthood can place enormous pressure on a relationship—especially when anxiety, stress, postpartum mood changes, or emotional overwhelm enter the picture.

Honored to serve as a presenter at the BCSD Counseling Services Mini-Conference focused on educator wellness and sustainable support strategies.

Fridays sessions centered on hitting the reset button on compassion fatigue and burnout AND understanding the parental burnout cycle and how school professionals can partner with families to create systemic change.

Wellness isn’t a one-day event — it’s a culture shift.

I’m passionate about helping districts integrate trauma-informed, family-centered strategies that reduce overwhelm and restore connection.

I’m looking forward to continuing this work across schools and communities.
