Happy Juneteenth! Let’s take a moment to thank all of the incredible black musicians throughout American history - known or unknown, famous or not - who paved the way for players all over the world. It’s no secret that so many forms of popular music were essentially invented by black artists. It ain’t a secret, but it’s not talked about enough.

Gospel, Blues, R&B, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop - all black music and numerous sub-genres are based on these. Even country music and bluegrass have roots in black music. One of my favorite instruments, the banjo, is a modern version of an African instrument. Rock and Roll? That’s just amped up blues music - first done by artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Chuck Berry.

If it wasn’t for strong black artists who resisted oppression and insisted on expression - we would be living in a very different, very lame world. Thank you thank you thank you to those from the past and those who continue to create and inspire the world today.

Carbondale gets a shoutout from NPR Tiny Desk! Thanks to everyone who has participated in the Tiny Desk Crashers project. Our goal was to gain some recognition for our diverse and talented music scene. Today we succeeded.

33 sounds like such a small number after all that work😅 we actually produced about 70 videos this year, but a bunch of folks didn’t submit. And last year we produced more than 150. Should we do it again next year? 🧐

Calling all So IL musicians! It’s that time of year again - Let’s crash the NPR Tiny Desk Contest!

Every year NPR accepts video submissions to be considered for their NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Last year we, together with Brand Advocacy Group, recorded more than 150 live music videos for Southern Illinois artists to submit - so that the amazing music from our little corner of the universe would be well represent in this national contest.

This year we are scaling back a little. Not necessarily trying to record 150+ vids. This way things will be less chaotic for everyone involved - we will be more organized with scheduling and we’ll be able to give more attention to production.

We still want to produce at least 50 live performance videos for Southern Illinois artists - with priority given to those who didn’t record last year. We encourage everyone to get in touch if they want to record. But we cannot guarantee that we will be able to get everyone on the schedule. We will be in the studio producing videos every weekend between now and the contest deadline - Feb 11th.
