Issue No. 135 of The hART features South Bend artist Joey Hiben and his work on two towering granite sculptures, commissioned as grave markers by a local family through ZStone Creations in Fine Stone Surfaces, a South Bend stonework company.

Primarily employing traditional sculpting methods and tools, Hiben's process incorporates digital maquettes and lasers as he shapes the forms of archangels Michael and Gabriel.

“This is showing that it’s OK to reach into the technology basket a little bit if you keep your feet rooted in the classical basket,” he said.

Issue No. 133 of The hART features emcee Myron Terrell Waddell aka Heyzeus prior to his headlining the Downtown Soul Art and Music Series July 27 at Elkhart's Five Star Dive Bar

Waddell goes deep into his fanaticism for sitcom "Frasier," why he was "devastated" after Circuit City shuttered its doors and how he believes South Bend's support network and culture have evolved since his youth.

“Growing up here in South Bend, there was never a big, artsy music scene. To be a part of it now is amazing,” he said.

“When we were growing up, my friends and I thought we’d have to move away to search for opportunities in bigger cities. Now, there’s a lot of pride in staying here, making it work. There’s no reason to go out and chase the big-city markets. We have it here.”

This week's issue also includes photos from Elkhart ArtWalk, Michael Calleri's review of "Echo in the Canyon" and a book review by Sheila Selman.
