"Deadly Love" by Mik Dagger

9.5 stars out of 10

When I agreed to give a listen and do a review of Mik Dagger's debut album, "Deadly Love" (https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/mikdagger1/deadly-love?fbclid=IwAR3u1N-2x-v2PedPtJ04w5JFxlX1MlGOfkGFdNzzAdrn6hF9JywCNekuDME) on Stereo Era Records (https://www.facebook.com/stereoera), I didn't know what I was in for. I'm mainly a rock, rock/pop, heavy rock, jazz, kind of guy and I was under the assumption that this would be more pop poppy pop. Maybe it's Mik's delivery, or the accompanying music, but this feels more like a rock album. A crossover kind of this like Fiona Apple or Tori Amos or Gwen Stefani. Pop but not. Songs that make you want to groove along. I've listened to a lot of debut albums and this is one of the most enjoyable I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! Sweet production, good sounds, great beats & grooves, with the cherry on top, Mik Dagger's seductive vocals. Do yourself a favor and buy this!!!! You won't be disappointed!!! I'm now a fan.

1 The first track by Ms. Dagger starts with a soft drum groove with a slamming bass groove and some keyboard groove on top. Her voice comes in and it reminds me of someone but I can't decide who because it also sounds original. I am loving the vocal harmonizing in this one. A nice off kilter guitar solo for the mid section takes you out of the mood for a moment and then sets you up to get back into the head swaying groove of the next verse. A short track at just over 3 minutes long, it set me up to get ready for more.

2 A shorter song than it's predecessor by around 15 seconds or so, track 2 begins with some crazy guitar/keyboards and then it busts in with a nice slow bass groove for a couple measures while we wait for Mik Dagger's smoothe voice to accompany it. I only have one photo here to accompany the music and it's the album cover, which is only a photo of Mik, I assume, with a lollipop, and gold necklaces spelling out the album name. Her pink hair almost matching the color of said lollipop. Her voice is what her photo looks like. If you can understand what I'm saying. Her lyrical content is definitely better than most pop songs on the charts, in my opinion. This one gives me a pop-reggae vibe musically and ends with a cool little effected keys outro.

3 This one comes in hot with the groove and Mik showering us with her sultry voice. The bass is on fire in this song, with an almost softer disco beat? Probably not disco, but it makes me want to dance! The subtle wah guitar is funky as f*ck!! Some tasty piano chords to fill in the sound. Loving the bridge breakdown so you can hear everything that's going on in the mix. I don't have any track names, so I can't be influenced by their titles or images. This is is my favorite so far, but I'm a sucker for funk. WOOOOOOO!!!

4 The intro gave me R&B vibes however once this kicked in, the bass made me feel like I'd been drinking, but I've only had coffee this morning, so far. The bass is badass. Dagger's vocal melodies in this song are fun and make want to sing along even though I don't know the lyrics. The mix is well done. The last one was my favorite until now. I'm writing these in real time as I listen. This song's a great tune, well done Mik Dagger & cohorts. Love the instrumental breakdown, I made my chair my dance partner and almost forgot to keep typing. This is a car song. I'm also so sick of sharing all this space with all these people. ;)

5 Ok, so this one starts out with a bass line like you might hear in the old Twin Peaks, which, I'm a fan of, so f*ck yeah! Banging drums come in soon after and makes you want to stomp your feet. Mik's voice is consistent throughout and sounds good with the accompanying music. It almost has a dark edge to it which juxtaposes the optimistic sounding music quite well. I'm in.

6 The "perusing through radio channels pre digital days" intro right into an almost angelic chanting keyboard thing caught my attention, but then when Ms. Dagger comes in with her vocals, f*ck yeah! Her vocal melody to start is great. This is a super short song but it's ok. It makes me want to listen twice. It's basically like one long part, but that's ok, because it's gooooooood. Second listen, I like the intro more on the second intro, it seems to make sense now. This is by far my favorite vocal melody Mik slaps me with on this album. The slow groove on this tune is awesome. An almost electronic style beat that works perfectly in the
pocket.
