Fellow Goshen Residents,
In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to remember the foundational principles that make our nation strong. As a fellow American and a proud member of this community, I want to talk about something that unites us all, regardless of our political affiliation: the First Amendment.
The First Amendment is not a partisan issue. It's the bedrock of our democracy and a shield for every single one of us. It guarantees the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to assemble peacefully, and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. For working families in Goshen, these rights are not abstract concepts—they are essential tools for building a better life.
Common sense tells us that a free and open exchange of ideas is how we find solutions to the problems we face. When we can speak our minds without fear, we can advocate for fair wages, safe working conditions, and quality education for our children. When we have a free press, we can hold our leaders accountable and ensure transparency in our local government. When we can assemble, we can organize to support our neighbors and build a stronger community.
But these rights are under threat. We see attempts to silence dissent, to limit access to information, and to stifle peaceful protest. This is not the American way. This is a time when common sense seems to be in short supply, and that's precisely why we must stand firm.
Protecting the First Amendment is about protecting our ability to fight for what’s right. It's about ensuring that every voice, especially the voices of working families, can be heard. It's about bringing back the common sense notion that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, can only thrive when those people are truly free.
Let's work together to defend these fundamental rights. Let's make sure that in Goshen, and across Orange County, we never take our freedoms for granted. Let's stand up for the First Amendment and, in doing so, stand up for ourselves and for the future of our community.
In solidarity,
Wendy
