Yesterday, student athletes from Section 9 ran against the best in the state at the NYSPHSAA State cross country championship in Queensbury NY. The conditions were perfect, the course was fast and we saw State Champions crowned in the Monroe-Woodbury Boys, Mount Academy Girls, and Van and Anna Furman from Tri-Valley. These are some of the toughest and hardest working athletes around!! Congratulations to all.

Class B Girls

Notable Graduates: Kerry Murphy, Julia Radjenovic

For 2024, we’ll coin Class B as the "House of the Dragon," with the Cornwall squads looking more dominant than ever. On the girls' side, Sophia Semo and Olivia Cibirka will lead the charge. Last year at Warwick, the Green Dragons combined for 21 points, and I think their 2024 squad can produce an even lower score, even with Kerry Murphy graduating.

Breaking up the Dragons will undoubtedly be Wallkill junior Caitlyn Murphy. Caitlyn had an incredible track record in 2023-2024, and the experience of postseason racing will only make her an even fiercer competitor. Wallkill teammate Emma Haughian will benefit from having Caitlyn as a training partner, and I predict a big sophomore season for her.

Let’s not discredit the power of teammates in smaller schools. I’m liking the tandems of Monticello seniors Diya Patel and incoming freshman Baya Titus, as well as OLL senior Bethany Catalano and sophomore Grace Gilroy.

New Paltz junior Dylan Friedman, who placed 8th at the section meet last year and was the 3rd competitor on the bench, is another one to watch. She’s accompanied by teammate Clio Miller, who’s on the bubble.

Predictions:

Team Champion: CornwallIndividual Champion: Caitlyn MurphyNext 5 in: Diya Patel, Dylan Friedman, Emma Haughian, Grace Gilroy

Section 9 Class A Boys

Notable Graduates: Gavin Rossi, Oliver Jibb

I don’t know if this will come as a surprise to anyone… The Crusaders are good. Really good. The returning section and federation champion Crusaders aren’t just favorites—they’re also climbing some national rankings early this season. Four of their top 5 scorers are back, including Gavin Catherwood, Shane Golio, and Devon Ryan. Coach Hemmer will have these battle-tested Crusaders ready to roll.

So, who’s looking at the next 5 in? This could get interesting. Kingston senior Andrew Lee is a sure-fire heavy hitter. As a team, Kingston might have a strong shot at silver with many returning scorers, including 800-1000 guy Lukas Paunovic and Timothy Leiching. A pair of Wizards, Joseph Mullan and James Mynio, are back as solid contenders. It’s hard to call him a “sleeper,” but I think the closer Brady Danyluk still runs XC. The speedy NFA duo of him and Devin Batelic had incredible indoor and spring seasons on the track.

On the bubble, Ryan Capo and Carter Rossi from Minisink, and John Kosowicz of Washingtonville, have plenty of time this season to make their way to the top.

How high can this FDR team go? Last year they finished 5th in the section and return 6 out of 7, with most being seniors. I guess it’s one more round for the boys!

Predictions:
Team Champion: Monroe-Woodbury
Individual Champion: Gavin Catherwood
Next 5 in: Andrew Lee, Brady Danyluk, Joseph Mullen, Devin Batelic, James Mynio

And… Here we go!

Section 9 Class A Girls Preview

Notable Graduate: Shaylen Goslar (PB)

Kicking off our class-by-class section preview, we have the Class A Girls. Last year at Sanfordville, the Monroe-Woodbury girls were led by then-freshman Olivia Heim, who also captured the individual crown. Olivia’s back, and after an impressive freshman outing—including a 2:12 800m victory at NBN—the Crusader squad isn’t slowing down. They’re bringing back 5 of their top 7 from 2023, including sophomore Lily Post and senior Lily Benza.

Hot on the Crusaders’ heels, the Warwick Valley Girls have assembled a team of 6 out of 7 returners, led by senior Alyssa Dovico, incoming freshman Trixie Wendell, and sophomore Julia Shlesinger. If there’s a team that has a shot at the Crusaders come November, it’s the Wildcats.

Another team to keep an eye on is the Wizards. Alexis

Jones and Olivia Decarvalho are experienced racers who’ll be backed by rising freshman Sydney Lozza. Rounding out the field, watch out for Kingston’s sophomore Hazel Lewis, who boasted a 4:39 1500m OCIAA championship, and Pine Bush freshman Julianne Gabriele, who finished in the upper half of last year’s NYSPHSAA Class A Championship as an 8th grader.

I’m keeping my eyes on the bubble: Sydney Remenar (VC), Mary Kane Politi (NFA), and Kathryn Jones (MV) are all poised for great seasons.

Predictions:
Team: Monroe-Woodbury
Individual Champion: Olivia Heim
Next 5 in: Alyssa Dovico, Alexis Jones, Hazel Lewis, Julianne Gabriele, Olivia Decarvalho

📸 Ahearn Classic 2024 📸

Wonderful night of racing at Warwick High School. Race dedicated to Warwick TF alum Brian Ahearn who lost his battle to cancer at age 14. The former Brian Ahearn Children's Fund raised over 1.1 million dollars for families in need. This year schools raised money for the Warwick Food Pantry after the BACF ceased operations.

Over 600 photos on the website.
