AINSWORTH – It would be hard to find a sports fan in Nebraska who hasn’t heard of Carter Nelson.

Ainsworth kid. Husker football recruit. Six-foot-5, 225 pounds. Great athlete.

A household name around the state, Nelson’s the modern-day version of an early 1970s Tom Kropp from Aurora or an early 1980s Bill Jackman from Grant. Small-town kids with big-time talent.

Temperatures last month were great! It isn’t uncommon for us to have a 70*F day or two during the second month of the year, but this year temperatures were well above average.

With the warmth have come plants emerging from the soil, trees budding out and birds singing in the yard. Just the other day, with temperatures in the 70’s, I listened to my resident cardinal, two or three blue jays, my resident white-breasted nuthatch, a red-breasted nuthatch…and robins!

Not far from Gothenburg, sits a peaceful little camp with a rich history of hosting events. Comeca Camp & Retreat Center has been a place of worship, play, and recreation for years. So much so that venturing its grounds has become somewhat second nature to some of Dawson County’s residents. This month, the camp will host Gothenburg’s YMCA St. Paddy’s run with hopes of encouraging health and wellness in the communities it serves.

Two weeks ago a wildfire broke out in North Platte and traveled east towards Brady and Gothenburg. Several fire departments responded to the call for aid that went out from North Platte and Brady was one of them.

In rural Nebraska, fire departments are volunteer-based. While volunteers are trained and given the gear they need to fight fires, the fire department is not their full-time job. Because of this, it is important to recognize the sacrifices these men and women make to keep our communities safe.

If you have had a piece of equipment or a vehicle worked on lately, then you know when the repair bill comes, it can be shocking. Maybe you were listening to the TV or radio and heard news that was shocking. Or perhaps, you simply ventured out into public, and got a good taste of what passes for fashion and music in the year 2024. But do you know what is truly shocking? What shocks more than all these other shocking experiences added together, and then multiplied by eight? An electric fencer.

The Brady Eagles fought hard on the court on Feb. 20, hoping to end their season with a victory. It was a well-rounded battle against the Sandhills Thedford Knights that remained neck and neck until the very end.

The purpose of the Leap Day is to bring our calendar back in line with the solar year. Three out of four years our calendar has 365 days, but there are actually 365.24218 days in a solar year so after the fourth year our calendar is off by 0.969 days, so we add a day. Of course, we are now 0.03 days ahead and that did lead to some problems…but ultimately we worked it out.

Dry conditions, above-average temperatures, and strong winds are a recipe for disaster when it comes to pastureland, and on Monday, Feb. 26, central Nebraska was reminded of that all too clearly.
