Arachis Press

Arachis Press The Arachis Press is a small publisher, presenting meaningful literature for readers of all ages. What is an Arachis and what happens when one is pressed?

Well, arachis is the scientific name for the peanut so I suppose one would have peanut oil! However, it is also a Greek word with the meaning of 'seed.' So we hope to be planting some seeds here and 'pressing' them into the soil of our readers' minds! (If you'll pardon a slightly clumsy and forced metaphor.) Our physical location is actually on a rural highway known as Peanut Road. This was one r

eason why we chose Arachis for our publishing endeavors. We may be found online at arachispress.com or go to our store at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/arachispress

Our blog is at http://arachispress.blogspot.com/ and if one wishes to follow us on Twitter, that would be https://twitter.com/ArachisPress

Incidentally, Arachis is not to be confused with nor pronounced like Arrakis, the planet in the novel Dune. The accent is on the first syllable, sort of like Aramis of The Three Musketeers.

We were not certain about releasing the novellas MISSION DELAYED and STORM STONE (coming shortly) in print editions. As ebooks, sure, but they're pretty slim for print books. They are, in truth, barely long enough to wear the novella name, but they are around the same size, printed, as our poetry collections so we decide to go ahead.

How big is a novella supposed to be? We feel about 15,000 words is a good lower limit. Some will set that just a tad higher; it is as much a matter of structure and story as it is of word count. A novelette 'feels' like a long short story where a novella comes across as a short novel. The upper limit? We like 35,000 words as the border between novel and novella. Again, some set it a bit higher.

Qala the Pirate Queen appears in four of Stephen Brooke’s fantasy novels. She was introduced as a secondary character in ‘The Eyes of the Wind,’ in which she is still the leader of the pirates. ‘The Crocodile’s Son’ and ‘The Crocodile God’ chronicle her adventures in retirement as a member of the landed gentry (and the mother of a demigod). We turn to her childhood as a refugee in the decaying city of Tesra in ‘The City and the Sword,’ when she was known as Lellie. Later she took the name of the city as her own, becoming Tes the pirate captain before rising to the position of queen.

It is as Tes she appears in the novella ‘Storm Stone,’ to be released in about a month (June 28). This is a tale of her days as a young pirate on her way to the top. All the books are available in print or as free ebooks at arachispress.com

The Late Show’s final broadcast last night marked the end of Colbert’s two-decades-long tenure as a frequent interviewer of authors and passionate book booster. Publishers now ponder a future where they can no longer count on the “Colbert bu
