The town of Granby is reopening its recruitment process for a new police chief after Chief David Shaffer, who has held the position since 2021, announced his resignation. According to Granby Town Manager Ted Cherry, Shaffer stepped down following a decision to move to Indianapolis to be closer to family.

There is currently no interim police chief serving the town of Granby. The position has been vacant since Shaffer left in July, Cherry said.

Town officials expect the hiring process will take one to two months, with job postings planned before mid-September and interviews likely concluding by mid-October.

Norman, Minnie and Mando are looking for their new forever homes after their owner passed away.

These three came are having a hard time adjusting to their new situation. The shelter volunteers are loving on them, but they are still sad with their mom’s passing.

All three are neutered male, domestic shorthair cats. Minnie Mew (gray) is about 16-years-old, but still very spry for his age. Mando (orange) is about 4-years-old. He’s very shy and unsure but sweet. Norman (white and black) is about 14-years-old, and is sweet as can be.

Please call the Grand County Animal Shelter if you would like to meet any of them at 970-887-2988.

At the start of the water year in October, most of western Colorado was not experiencing drought, but this started to change in the spring.

“Drought has been building in the western part of the state over the course of many months, originating back to last winter, when there was lackluster snowpack over much of the state,” climatologist Allie Mazurek said. “That led to the below-normal runoff we saw in many of our river basins this summer, and the abnormally hot and dry conditions that have characterized the past several months haven’t helped.”

Mazurek added that northwest Colorado has seen “the quickest developing drought” since October.

Western Colorado has had a record-setting summer as hot and dry conditions have persisted for much of the season. While recent rainstorms have brought much-needed precipitation to the region, relief from drought may be unlikely.  ...

Before the July decision to cut over $1 billion in public media funding, KFFR's executive director Ryan Wilson said the station was on track to qualify for a grant that would have provided up to $180,000 annually — nearly double its current budget.

Despite a lean budget and only two full-time staff members, KFFR continues to recruit citizen journalists. The station currently has 65 volunteer DJs, all of whom are highly dedicated to a mission of community-centered programming, Wilson said.

The federal government’s recent shutdown of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is already creating significant budget strains for Colorado news stations, including KFFR 88.3 FM, Grand County’s community radio station.  Before the July decision to...

To obtain the governor’s signature, bill sponsors removed a provision that would have halted wolf releases — something Western Slope producers feel would help.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed into law on Thursday a measure that will redirect a small portion of the state’s wolf budget toward health insurance subsidies.  The bill was introduced by a bipartisan group of...
