CAPACITY KEEPS YOU IN THE FIGHT.

Research shows that aerobic capacity (VO₂max) is one of the strongest predictors of firefighter performance. Firefighters with higher VO₂max complete stair climbs, hose drags, and carries faster and with less physiological strain (Williams-Bell et al., 2009). Inadequate aerobic fitness increases cardiac strain—the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths (Smith et al., 2019).

Why it matters:
• Higher VO₂max = faster, safer performance
• Quicker recovery between bouts of work
• Reduced risk of cardiac events on shift

How to apply:
• Train VO₂max 2–3x per week
• Use interval training on rower, air bike, or treadmill
• Build aerobic capacity as your operational baseline

Strong muscles move weight. Strong hearts keep you alive.

The Gift of a Warning: Why 1% Change Could Save Your Life.

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of working with O2X as a lead instructor at our workshop for the Detroit Fire Department. During one of the breaks on our last day, I found myself standing near a group of firefighters, coffee in hand, only half tuned in to the conversation. That’s when I overheard one firefighter opening up about his weight loss journey—and, more importantly, the 'why' behind it....

Discover the power of early warning signs for health transformation. Learn how small changes can lead to life-saving decisions.

The GBRS Group Performance Standards are a benchmark for what matters: strength, speed, power, endurance, and capacity — the same qualities that define readiness and excellence on the fireground.

No fluff. No hacks.

You can’t fake strength under load.

Every drag, lift, and carry you do on the fireground has a cost—and the stronger you are, the cheaper it gets.

Maximal strength is the foundation.

Squats, deadlifts, presses—done heavy, with intent—make every step with 75 lbs of gear feel lighter, every rescue faster, and every shift safer.

Stronger firefighters burn less energy, fatigue slower, and stay in the fight longer.

Train heavy.

Recover hard.

Show up ready.
