Husker Holys Announces Retirement from Podcasting Following Upcoming Bowl Game
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Longtime Nebraska football podcaster, local music educator, and Ordained Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church James “HuskerHolys” Holys has announced he will retire from podcasting following this season’s bowl game.
Holys launched his show during the Scott Frost coaching era, a time marked by high hopes and difficult seasons for the Cornhuskers. The podcast, typically around 30 minutes per episode, gained a loyal following for its upbeat tone and concise format.
“I started this podcast when we all had big expectations,” Holys said. “Even when the results were disappointing, it became a source of therapy and positivity for me and for the listeners.”
Over the years, Holys cultivated lasting friendships with contributors including “The Illustrious” Mike Gapp and “Jumbo Jet” Jon Linden. Among his most meaningful connections was with Dr. Chip Smith, a frequent guest and mentor.
“Chip was one of my greatest heroes,” Holys said. “When he passed away, it was very hard to keep going. When Mike moved away, that was tough too. I’m grateful to the “Jumbo Jet” John Linden, for helping me carry it forward this last year.”
Holys, now an Ordained Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church, said his growing ministry responsibilities and changes in college football have contributed to his decision to step away.
“With both the changes to the game and my new schedule as a Deacon, I only got to watch two Husker games this season,” he said. “Reporting from highlights didn’t feel right. The game itself has changed, and some things I loved as a kid aren’t as strong today. But I’ll always love Nebraska football, just in a different way.”
Holys said the podcast will conclude with one final episode following the upcoming bowl game. He has not yet decided whether past episodes will remain online. “I might keep them up for people to enjoy,” he said.
Looking ahead, Holys plans to focus on his ministry, teaching, and music projects with the Lucky Ducky Creek Band. He also hopes to write and record a Cornhusker-themed album in the future.
“I’m proud of what the podcast became and thankful for everyone who listened and shared the journey,” Holys said. “Go Big Red.”
