Post-spring game thoughts from Go Big Ribbit 🐸🌽
I listened to the spring game on the radio this year. That probably says a lot about where I’m at as a fan right now.
I love the Huskers. I always will. But I’m not getting emotionally wrapped up in it like I used to. And I don’t think I’m alone.
There’s no hype this year. And honestly, that’s okay.
We’ve been through a lot as a fan base. We remember. We remember the expectations, the coaching changes, the hope, and the letdowns. That kind of thing sticks with you. It changes how you watch.
Right now, I see Matt Rhule for what he is. He’s not Tom Osborne. He’s not Bob Devaney. But he might fortunately/unfortunately be exactly what we need.
He’s a foundation guy.
He’s steady. He’s building something sustainable. And in today’s world of NIL and constant movement, that matters more than ever. He’s not flashy, but he’s stable. And after everything we’ve been through, stability has value.
But here’s the truth. Our fan base has now been through so many traumatic losses and bitter disappointments that we now seem that we’re collectively not buying in all the way until we see it.
We need that moment.
We need to beat someone we’re not supposed to beat.
Until that happens, it’s going to feel like we’re just waiting.
I look at what Fred Hoiberg has done. It wasn’t pretty at first. People questioned everything. He was on the brink. And now look at it. Growth can happen. Breakthroughs can happen.
That’s what I want to see with Rhule.
I don’t need perfection. I don’t need a title right away. I just need to see that next step. That moment where you say, okay, this is real.
Nebraska might not be the powerhouse we once were right now. The Big Ten doesn’t love us. We’re kind of doing our own thing. But we’re still here. We’re still showing up. And we’re still building.
And let’s be real. Football matters, but it’s not the only thing anymore. Basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, wrestling. We’re competing. We’re earning respect across the board. That matters too.
So yeah. No hype. No overreaction.
Just watching. Just waiting.
And hoping that this is the year we finally see Coach Rhule make that personal breakthrough of winning a game he isn’t supposed to win.
Go Big Red. 🐸🌽
