Reporters in general and newspaper reporters in particular never want to make themselves part of the story. On the other hand, reporters always want to tell other people what they have learned or discovered. They never want to keep a secret. So, this is just a short Facebook note to let people know that I am retiring and that my last day at The Independent is Friday, Dec. 15. I’ve enjoyed telling readers of The Grand Island Independent and Central Nebraska all the stories that this part of the world has to offer: From tornadoes to debates over whether a school bond issue should be passed to arguments over whether Grand Island voters should approve its first-ever city sales tax to who is running for political office to anecdotes about people who simply have an interesting tale to share with others.

Moved into existing Northwest High School?

Dale Crandell is a baker, a soup-maker and - not a candlestick-maker - but a woodworker and an all-round good volunteer for the community.

Dale Crandell has a kind face that people remember. Even President John F. Kennedy remembered him by name as they passed each other walking through the White House.
