** Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in Effect **
The Mesa County Sheriff, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Grand Junction Field Office, Colorado National Monument, and the Fire Chiefs representing municipalities and fire protection districts of Mesa County are implementing Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2026. These restrictions apply to all private land and BLM managed public lands within the boundaries of the Grand Junction Field Office, which includes Mesa County. At this time the White River, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests are not implementing fire restrictions. For information on Fire Restrictions on land managed by the U.S. Forest Service, please visit the USDA Forest Service website.
Fire restrictions are implemented based on specific criteria, including the moisture content of vegetation, weather outlooks, and human risk factors. Please review the information below for prohibited actions and activities while in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.
Stage 1 Fire Restrictions prohibit:
- Personal use of fireworks
- Campfires outside of designated fire pits or fire rings
- Agricultural open burning without a Sheriff’s issued burn permit
- Use of explosive targets
- Smoking outside near combustible materials
- Operating or using any internal combustion engine, such as chainsaws, without a spark-arresting device properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order.
- Welding or operating Acetylene or other torches with an open flame except in cleared areas of at least 10 feet in diameter, you MUST have a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher.
Combined with current dry conditions and consistently high temperatures, a single spark has the potential to cause a dangerous fire and spread quickly. In addition to adhering to fire restrictions, community members are asked to be aware of all other potential fire dangers when outdoors. A spark from a dragging chain on a trailer or even a hot exhaust pipe from a car parked in tall grass poses a significant fire risk. Ci******es must be disposed of in proper receptacles and campfires must never be left unattended.

❗️TRAVEL ALERT | ROAD CLOSURE - I-70 from Chacra to Dotsero❗️

⚠️UPDATE - 8:10 p.m. (6/9) - I-70 eastbound is now open in both lanes. I-70 westbound is opening in stages. Traffic at the Glenwood Springs exit, 116, is being released westbound through one open lane on I-70 in the first stage. Once that queue has been lessened, westbound traffic held at the Dotsero exit, 133, will be released.

🚫I-70 both directions is CLOSED🚫 - 6:20 p.m. (6/9/2026) - I-70 remains closed in both directions from Chacra, Mile Point 109, to Dotsero, MP 133, due to an active fire. There is no estimated time for opening. Commuters are encouraged to use the norther detour route.

Westbound travelers:
- Take the Wolcott Exit, 159, north on CO 131, to US 40. Stay on US 40 past Craig, then take CO 13 southbound back to I-70 at Rifle.

Eastbound travelers:
- Take the Rifle Exit north on CO 13 to US 40. Take US 40 through Craig to CO 131. Take CO 131 south to Wolcott and back onto I-70.
