Hilaritas Press grew out of a desire to keep the books of Robert Anton Wilson in print and to fulfill Bob’s wish to provide for his children, something that during his life was difficult when authors typically receive less than ten percent of the money generated by their work. Bob’s daughter Christina and his friend Rasa, directing enterprises of the Robert Anton Wilson Trust, created Hilaritas Pr

ess as a way to fulfill Bob’s wishes and insure that his legacy remains robust. We’ve enlisted the aid of a small group of Bob’s treasured friends and others who are advising and helping out the Trust on RAW related matters. Throughout his life he generously gave thanks and returned support for the many people who were touched by his heart, humor and wisdom. Bob said that he first got the word hilaritas from Ezra Pound’s Cantos which was quoting the Byzantine philosopher Gemistus Pletho who said “you can recognize gods even in their human form by their outstanding hilaritas.” Bob notes that in Pletho’s time, hilaritas meant “cheerfulness, good humor we would say, but not in the sense of always joking.” For many years Bob would often sign his letters, and then emails with “amor et hilaritas”, or simply “hilaritas”. After editing, reformatting and publishing Bob’s books in eBook and Print editions, a huge task that will take us a while, Hilaritas Press will invite other adventurous authors to become members of the Hilaritas Press family.

On the inside flaps of the new hardcover's jacket is a bit of text from Cosmic Trigger II. In his description of the 8 Circuits, RAW used the same placement of Circuits 6 & 7 that he used in Prometheus Rising. That differs from Tim Leary's version, but it should be noted that Leary said Bob's Prometheus Rising description of the circuits was better than his. See the Hilaritas Press's edition for an afterword that goes into that issue in detail.

Circuits 1 to 4
Leary distinguishes eight types of intelligence. The first four are:

Bio-Survival Intelligence: seems mostly genetic and tells an animal or human how to find the nourishing and “supportive” and how to avoid the predatory or toxic.

Emotional-Territorial Intelligence: tells an animal how to read the body-language of another animal and know what the other animal is feeling (and, hence, what it will probably do next.)

Semantic Intelligence: is based on genetic potential and early imprints but mostly is learned slowly, over years, from peers and instructors. It allows us to understand one or two symbol systems (or even several if we are clever) and perhaps to create a symbol-system of our own, sometimes.

Socio-Sexual Intelligence: allows us to manage our social and sexual relations in ways that keep us reasonably happy or at least out of jail.

Circuits 5 to 8

Leary’s other four types of intelligence, which are rare in our society, are:

Neurosomatic Intelligence: the “wisdom of the body” holistic physicians talk about;

Neurogenetic Intelligence: access to the “collective unconscious” or “species mind” where archetypes like the inward-turning spiral or King Kong are stored and, when activated, trigger leaps of intuition;

Metaprogramming Intelligence: the capacity to turn on and tune in to each type of intelligence as needed; and

Non-Local Intelligence: which enables one to endure “mystical” experiences without coming out of them as a raving loony.

Hilaritas Press releases The Starseed Signals!

In 1974, Robert Anton Wilson wrote a book about the ideas and tribulations of his close friend, Dr. Timothy Leary. Intriguingly, this manuscript would not be published until some 46 years later, having been put aside and then lost for decades. In 1986, RAW wrote The New Inquisition which had as a partial focus the persecution of Timothy Leary and Wilhelm Reich. In some respects, The Starseed Signals seems like an earlier attempt to address that same kind of injustice, as the book was written while Leary was experiencing an inquisition, a victim of the Nixon administration and the general punitive zeitgeist.
In his introduction to the book, John Higgs writes,
"What's remarkable about this previously lost and unpublished-until-now manuscript is not only that RAW puts forward the case for Leary's ideas, but he does so at the time when Leary's reputation was at its lowest. The sixties were over, and the paranoia of the 70s had begun. Leary was yesterday's man, lost somewhere deep within the American prison system, denounced by former friends and rumored to be snitching on the entire counterculture."
RAW addresses Leary's troubles with insights that will intrigue historians, while also offering delights for those who value Leary's many contributions to various fields in the social sciences. Of particular note is RAW's early description of the Eight Circuits Model of Consciousness, which we learn had been a collaborative effort between the two friends.
The Starseed Signals stands as a unique title in the Robert Anton Wilson canon, offering a revealing and very personal look at the tumultuous early years of the 1970's. As John Higgs notes, "You get the Timothy Leary you deserve, as we know. But perhaps we also deserve the Timothy Leary that Robert Anton Wilson got."

I love all of RAW's books, but ever since I first read Ishtar Rising, I have developed a number of theories about why the humans on this planet seem to be so messed up. Most crucial to my thinking was that I found that I agree with RAW, the female-male (and hence, the Matrist-Patrist) imbalance in the human psyche sits at the root of many of our conflicts. Ishtar Rising is another one of those RAW books I think should be part of every high school curriculum.

V. Vale and RE/SEARCH just published Beyond Conspiracy Theory.
Vale gave Hilaritas Press permission to republish on our blog, Amor et Hilaritas, Andrew Bishop's introduction to Vale's interview of Robert Anton Wilson. The interview itself is a wonderful read – strongly recommended for all serious RAW fans. Andrew Bishop's introduction struck me as one of the better short introductions to RAW I've come across – concise and relevant to the times. If you are introducing someone to RAW for the first time, Andrew's piece is a great place to start.
