At 11 at the State Capitol on Monday, Walz read verbatim the remarks he made public three hours earlier — he was dropping out of the governor’s race because of the mushrooming Medicaid fraud scandal.

Looking out at a reception room packed to the gills with reporters standing and sitting cross-legged on the floor, Walz then said he wouldn’t take questions and walked away from the podium.

Here is some context on why Walz reversed his earlier decision to try and become the first Minnesota governor ever elected to three terms.

The governor’s remarks Monday were an admission that Medicaid fraud has subsumed his administration

As we begin a new year, January is a time to reflect, reset, and renew our commitment to one another. Volunteers are the heart of our work, and the dedication you bring—especially during the winter months—helps ensure our community starts the year stronger and more connected. This month, we’re highlighting the impact of volunteerism, sharing opportunities to get involved, and celebrating the many ways volunteers make a difference every day.

Bridger Hopkins, a local Grand Rapids graduate, has a degree in mechanical engineering and when asked years ago, would have told anyone that he was going to be just that, a mechanical engineer.

Now, he’s a real estate agent for Grand Properties with podcaster being his most recent title. Bridge Out Ahead, a podcast built from and by the stories of the local community, has recently been ramping up.

Every year, the stories we tell at the Herald Review serve as a collective diary for our community. Looking back, 2025 was a year defined by the “unseen work” of ordinary people who live, love, choose, and believe in the Northland.

Thank you so much for reading and supporting local news. We are looking forward to 2026 and all the stories yet to be told!

Roots & Wings Early Learning Center, LLC, affectionately called “The Mustard Seed” by owners Rob and Krista Sjostrand, is set to open spring of 2026.

When the Sjostrands came across the 30-acre property in Coleraine in July of 2023, their vision could be seen through the woods, which is about six minutes from downtown Grand Rapids.

Krista said, “It was spectacular. I could see little people out there sledding and climbing. It’s safe, the woods aren’t super thick, it’s just so fun. I could already hear the laughter.”
