🎊 President Rogalski’s Investiture Marks a Historic Moment for Grand Rapids Community College

On Friday, Sept. 18, students, staff, and faculty gathered at Fountain Street Church to celebrate the Investiture of Kathryn Rogalski as the 12th President of Grand Rapids Community Colleges

Former GRCC Presidents and other college officials were also in attendance, sharing thoughtful remarks about Rogalski’s leadership and vision for the college.

In her speech, Rogalski expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, and the GRCC community, highlighting the importance of collaboration in building a thriving and leading college.

The ceremony marked a significant moment in Rogalski’s career and in GRCC’s history, as she makes history as the college’s first permanent woman president.

“We are going to building something amazing together,” President Rogalski said. “We are going to keep on doing amazing work, and to all the students, we are behind you and standing with you, all of you.”

🎨 ArtPrize is in full swing!

Starting on Sept. 18 and going until Oct. 3, ArtPrize is hosting over a thousand different unique pieces of art around Grand Rapids, the most art presented for ArtPrize in a decade. ArtPrize events based around different art expressions will also occur weekly!

At GRCC, six works can be found in the Collin’s Art Gallery on the fifth floor of RJF Hall, and four entries can be found in the Spectrum Theater.

Additionally, “Breaking Bad” actor Bryan Cranston’s alcohol brand, Dos Hombres, is a major sponsor of ArtPrize and Cranston himself is planning to attend.

🖤❤️September is Sepsis Awareness Month

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that happens when the body’s immune system has an extreme response to an infection, causing damage to its own tissues and organs. This can lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and death if not promptly treated. Anyone can get an infection, and infections of almost any kind can turn into sepsis.

Sepsis does not discriminate. It affects children, the elderly, college students, the healthy, the chronically ill, and everyone in between.

Feature Editor Ella Ware shares their experience with septic shock, as well as symptoms of sepsis that anyone can look out for.

On Sept. 17, students participated in bouquet making and cheered on the GRCC Raiders at the Homecoming game. Students are looking forward to the finale of the week, the Homecoming dance on Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.

📰Five protestors arrested after Kent County Indivisible ICE Rally

On Saturday, Sept. 12, protestors gathered at Sixth Street Park to speak out against ICE. The protestors started at the park and then made their way towards the ICE Field Office on Ottawa Ave where the protest took a turn.

Five protestors were arrested by GRPD and it’s speculated at least four people were detained by ICE.

“Here in Kent County, we have lost over 1,000 people to deportation since Trump took office. To put that in perspective, today’s the 600th day of Trump’s second term. That’s more than one person per day in just this county. A school kid loses their best friend, a neighborhood loses a pillar, a heart breaks… more than once per day,” said Joshua Ferguson, representative for the Grand Rapids Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that shook America. Whether you saw it on the TV or were there, 9/11 marked one of the most influential days in American history. We honor the lives lost with celebrations and symbolic acts of patriotism with stair climbs and visits to Ground Zero.

However, during that time, an entire generation was born. People that never experienced 9/11 and its immediate affects, but have lived in the aftermath that still is apparent today. 

Those who lived through 9/11 often heard the phrase “never forget.” How can you forget something you never experienced? How do different generations see 9/11?

🏥 Free STI Testing is Coming to GRCC Campus

On Thursday, Sept. 10, GRCC’s HealthBar is collaborating with The Red Project to provide free STI (sexually transmitted infection) tests for students. The tests will continue to be conducted every second Thursday of the month during the 2026-2027 school year.

“The testing process itself is very straightforward,” said Tiara Rudzinski, a Clinical Nurse (CNS) and HealthBar Specialist. “Students can expect a brief conversation about the test, a finger poke blood sample, and then receive their results (after about 20 minutes) during the visit. Students do not need to prepare in advance, and the entire process is designed to be fast, confidential, and convenient,” Rudzinski said.

🌎 Climate Change is here, and you should be worried

The Collegiate sat down with Tari Mattox, a geologist and longtime professor at Grand Rapids Community College, to discuss climate change and the impacts we may see in the future.

“The last 11 years have been the 11 warmest years on record…And the last three years have been the three warmest years on record. So this trend of breaking records, that’s not normal. That is not a stable climate,” Mattox said.
