We believe we are justified by grace, not by our works. Yet in marriage, we can quickly start keeping score and expecting our spouse to earn our approval.

The gospel should shape how we repent, forgive, and extend grace at home.

There are four words every Christian husband should consider as he reads Ephesians 5.

Love her absolutely. “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Not 50%. 100%.

Love her purposefully. Seek her spiritual good. Wash her with the water of the Word. Desire to present her to Christ holier because she was married to you.

Love her realistically. She is a sinner, and so are you. Don’t make a habit of correcting every small thing.

Love her sacrificially. If something gets in your eye, you don’t decide to deal with it tomorrow. When your wife is hurting, give her your attention. Listen to her. Care for her.

Love her absolutely, purposefully, realistically, and sacrificially.

We live in the best of times and the worst of times.

The best, because we can easily spread Gospel resources across the world, and churches across continents are hungry for truth.

But the danger is real too.

Worldliness can creep into the church quietly. We can have more access to truth than ever before and still lack holy habits, hatred of sin, deep fellowship, and a burning love for Christ.

What we need is not just more content.

We need more holiness and Christ-centered fellowship. We need believers who can say with conviction: “There’s no other way to live.”

The opportunity is great. The need is urgent. And Christ is altogether lovely.
