Ever the dreamer, I’ve been wanting to see this place in person for years. But with all adventures, you’ve got to get there first. And this is where I started to feel a little uneasy (OK, terrified).…The Slates are close enough to the mainland that you can see them easily from shore. But they’re also a world away, considering what’s in between: 7 miles of the Jackfish Channel, which has some of the longest southeast and southwest fetches of any place on Superior — about 200 miles of open water. The channel acts as a funnel between the islands and the mainland, creating extreme currents. ⁠

We're on day 2/2 of our Fall Retreat (check our stories to see what we're up to)! Let's introduce Michaela! Michaela Rai joined the team in late summer to take care of people, systems, and the stories that bring us all together! She (among other things) is a photographer that works to create safety in perception for her clients and also creates fine art underwater photographs of Lake Superior. You can follow her work at ! She loves being in the woods or water with her kids and snuggling with their zoo of furry creatures! Plus swipe for her favorites from the Lake & Co shop!
