Lost And Lonesome are rapt to announce that The Smallgoods' long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s sprawling epic Down on the Farm is OUT TODAY!
Self-produced in a secluded studio outside of Melbourne in the lush forest of the Dandenong Ranges, the aptly named Lost in the Woods shows The Smallgoods have lost none of their predilection for spiking wondrous pop songs with a hefty dose of expansive psychedelia and dark balladry.
On their third album, the inherent songcraft that’s sprinkled the proverbial magic dust across albums by The Zebras and Architecture in Helsinki is on full display; with three brilliant songwriters on hand – Ben Mason and the brothers Lachlan and Gus Franklin – there’s never been a shortage of hooks among the group’s toolbag.
Indeed, side-one of Lost in the Woods plays like a masterclass in twentieth century pop songwriting. The Laurel Canyon back-and-forth of ‘Where’ve You Been all This Time’ is butted up against the album’s three singles: the electric piano AM radio-pop of ‘On With the Show’, the doo-wop inspired lullaby 'Hurry Up & Slow Down' and the Teenage Fanclub-had-they-been-produced-by-Jeff Lynne layered jangle of ‘Satellite’.
Side-two meanwhile, takes a decidedly trippy turn, leading off with the the dystopian prog of ‘The Mirror’ which drifts seamlessly into dream-pop territory on ‘A Month of Sundays’, featuring Denim Owl’s Janita Foley sharing lead vocals with Gus Franklin. Adorned with an insanely catchy guitar motif and refreshingly languid vocals, the song wouldn’t be out of place on a ‘lost shoegaze classics’ mixtape.
The album is packaged up beautifully in Warren Taylor’s beguiling graphics and is available on black vinyl as well as limited-edition white vinyl. T-shirt + vinyl bundle in the mix too! https://thesmallgoods.bandcamp.com/album/lost-in-the-woods
